Opportunity Overview

TuSimple’s Senior Manager, Tax operates as a highly visible, cross-functional, collaborative leader; partnering with Operations, Finance, Legal, Investor Relations, external consultants, etc. with respect to project analysis, implementation, reporting and necessary documentation.


The Senior Manager, Tax, oversees TuSimple’s global tax strategy including initiating and implementing domestic and international tax strategies, leading/steering/participating in global tax examinations, and directing TuSimple’s income tax financial forecasting and accounting pursuant to ASC 740. Additionally, the incumbent manages the day-to-day operational, technical tax, and compliance activities for the organization, including designing tax processes, leading or supporting cross-functional initiatives, and ensuring key tax deadlines.

Role Responsibilities

  • Serves as a key member of the Global Controllership leadership team, directly impacting the global tax strategy, (including advising on the tax implications of investment decisions), and leading/supporting the achievement of TuSimple’s long-term tax and financial plans.
  • Partners with the business, providing tax expertise for business initiatives. Participates with and advises leadership on the tax implications of major non-recurring business activities (i.e. M&A, major reorganizations, major legal cases/settlements, others).
  • Learns the evolving TuSimple business and culture; establishes trusted and collaborative working relationships with the management team, internal stakeholders, external auditors and service providers, and any other external stakeholders necessary to facilitate optimal business operations. Develops and maintains a strong network of expert tax advisors.
  • Provides leadership, communication, education, mentoring, and coaching to TuSimple’s business and finance professionals, deepening the understanding of the Company’s US tax compliance and USGAAP income tax reporting processes and results.
  • Leads TuSimple’s strategic tax planning, including identifying and implementing high-value tax strategies, driving optimization of TuSimple’s domestic and foreign tax position, and researching and analyzing complex tax legislation and issues.
  • Keeps abreast of tax legislation and developments and devises strategies to address changes in tax law. Proactively anticipates how business, legislative, USGAAP, SEC regulations, and other changes impact TuSimple’s tax financial reporting and disclosure, and implements strategies to optimize advantages or mitigate potential risks.
  • Provides oversight to the international tax teams to proactively deliver/manage/resolve foreign tax deliverables.
  • Leads IRS audits and defense of any potential issues.
  • Leads income tax forecasting and financial statement reporting of quarterly and annual income tax provisions (current and deferred) and related disclosures.
  • Designs and maintains strong SOX controls related to US GAAP income tax reporting. Continually improves and scales tax compliance and accounting processes, including building automation and leveraging tax reporting software and advanced excel functions.
  • Directs the documentation of audit files (calculations and internal controls) to enable effective and efficient external auditor sign-offs

 

Experience & Skills Required

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business, or related field
  • 8 years of progressive experience with corporate income taxes, including compliance and tax accounting in public accounting and/or a corporate tax department
  • Track record of tax planning for dynamic, growth-oriented, and global businesses, including M&A required; foreign tax credit planning, finance structure planning.
  • Strong knowledge and experience with US federal income taxes; understanding of international taxation with proven ability to locate, assess, interpret, and provide credible international taxation resources and information.
  • Highly proficient in and knowledgeable of financial accounting and reporting aspects of taxation per US GAAP (ASC 740)
  • Hands-on experience with running scalable US GAAP income tax accounting models and tax reporting software.
  • Superior Excel skills and experience with Netsuite, SAP, or other large ERP environments.
  • Proven ability to utilize digital mid-layer technologies such as process/workflow automation, data analytics, and/or visualization (e.g., FloQast, Workiva, Alteryx, OneStream, Tableau, BlackLine, Teradata).
  • Proven ability to communicate and explain complex tax issues to non-tax teams, managing the balance of tax and business unit/corporate needs.
  • Deep technical expertise in Sarbanes Oxley 404 concepts for public multinational companies
  • Proven ability to lead U.S. tax due diligence efforts, as well as, post-acquisition planning and integration efforts, including addressing the tax accounting impact of transactions such as acquisitions, mergers, divestitures, etc.
  • Ability to effectively design and implement process improvements to complete tasks more efficiently and accurately
  • Deep understanding of U.S. federal and state and local tax compliance in a global structure; including review of returns and supporting workpapers, audit defense, and planning strategies
  • Proven ability to lead a team, develop strategic plans, and execute accordingly.

 

Preferred

  • CPA or Tax JD, preferred
  • Big 4 tax experience managing multinational organizations’ taxes, strongly preferred
