Job Category Engineering & Science Position Summary The Core Polymer Sciences division at Bridgestone America’s is actively seeking a scientist to join an interdisciplinary team working to solve problems at the leading edge of tire technology. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations of an analytical laboratory focused on new method development and advanced instrumental analysis. Responsibilities Typical duties would include: Under the direction of an experienced analytical scientist, prepare polymer and tire samples for analysis, operate a variety of cutting edge analytical laboratory equipment, optimize conditions, and develop new methods based on findings As part of a team, support a wide array of business units through efficient problem solving and technical knowledge and to validate new materials and tire concepts through advanced analytical experimentation Help scientists and engineers with troubleshooting operational issues as they relate to analytical instrumentation and sample preparation Lead a microscopy-related project with some assistance of experienced analytical scientists Develop high-level programs and macros for data handling and reporting Drive improvement by assisting with special lab projects Utilize statistical analysis for data interpretation Analyze test results and communicate them effectively in summary reports and presentations Assist in organization and upkeep of laboratory supplies, workspace, and equipment Maintain an accurate, detailed laboratory notebook and enter data into a Lab Information Management System Maintain and ensure safe laboratory environment and work practices Manage some group safety activities Qualifications Required: B.S. 2 years work experience in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Biological Sciences, or a related technical discipline Hands on laboratory experience preparing samples (e.g., solvent extractions, microtome) for and operation of analytical instrumentation such as microscopy (e.g., SEM, TEM, FIB-SEM, optical microscopes, AFM), spectroscopic methods (e.g., FTIR, Raman, NMR), chromatographic methods (e.g., LC, GC, GPC), and/or thermal (TGA, DSC) methods Attention to detail Strong organizational skills Willingness to learn and ability to learn quickly Self-motivated and able to work effectively on multiple projects simultaneously with a sense of urgency Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in teams and with customers Domestic and international travel is sometimes required Preferred: M.S. in Chemistry, Polymer Science, or a related technical discipline. Previous experience with rubber compounds, polymers, nanocomposites, nanomaterials and/or tire industry. Experience in troubleshooting, maintaining, and calibrating laboratory equipment and analytical instruments Strong applied computing skills, including data manipulation & statistical analysis applications (e.g., Excel, Matlab, Minitab); ability to master data-acquisition software packages (e.g., LabView); programming (Excel macros, ImageJ, VBA, Python). Machine learning-based image processing background is a plus Minimum Qualifications Typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 2 years of related experience; or an advanced degree without experience; or equivalent work experience Bridgestone is proud to be an Equal Employment Opportunity / Affirmative Action employer.
