Position Summary:

The UC Irvine Department of Chemistry is one of four departments in the School of Physical Sciences. We train thousands of general education students each year in Chemistry fundamentals and provide administrative support to our faculty and research staff, while providing world-class education and training for our student population while pushing the frontiers of knowledge through cutting edge research. Under general direction, the incumbent provides technical support in the delivery of the organic, other chemistry courses and other special summer programs associated with the 5th Floor Stockroom. This position requires knowledge of chemical theory and application in order to set up and test new experiments for faculty; prepare equipment, reagents and solutions as needed for laboratory courses; assist faculty with new experimental procedures and modification of existing ones; order and maintain chemicals and supplies, keep financial and technical records, and monitor budgets; maintain safety practices in both the stockroom and laboratories; arrange for legally proper and safe disposal of chemical waste; minimize chemical waste and disposal costs; supervise and train student assistants. The incumbent advises teaching assistants regarding the proper procedures for the laboratory experiments, as well as informing faculty and teaching assistants of any known or anticipated pitfalls. The position provides direct assistance to faculty in charge of laboratory courses serviced by the 5th Floor and to the Department upon request. This position provides laboratory safety supervision and consultation to all undergraduate teaching laboratories on the 2nd, 4th, and 5th floors of Rowland Hall.

$29.19 - $30.62 (Hourly Rate) Expected Pay Range within the Full Salary Range $29.19 - $35.11 (Hourly Rate)

Required:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in chemistry, biology, chemical engineering, or materials science.
  • Theoretical and working knowledge of the use of balances, stirrers, spectrophotometers, pH meters, regulators, volt-meters, UV-VIS, GC's, NMR, FTIR's and other laboratory equipment. 
  • Sufficient laboratory background to correctly perform and evaluate all course experiments within the position's responsibility. Working knowledge of preparing and testing solutions for accuracy and purity. 
  • Knowledge of current Cal OSHA safety regulations and practices as they apply to chemical laboratories and waste disposal. 
  • Familiarity with Environmental Health and Safety waste disposal regulations and practices. Must have sufficient knowledge of physical properties and incompatibilities of chemicals to execute safe disposal procedures. Familiarity with Environmental Health and Safety and Chemistry Department safety policies and procedures and have good knowledge of safe laboratory practices. 
  • Experience performing fiscal/budgetary analysis, preparing accurate cost estimates, and monitoring operating expenses of the Chemistry Teaching Stockroom. 
  • Demonstrated experience, using oral and written methods, to work, communicate with, and provide accurate information in an effective and diplomatic manner to a diverse group of Faculty, Staff, and Students. 
  • Advanced experimental knowledge sufficient to evaluate and modify new experiments for the Chemistry teaching laboratory program. 
  • Demonstrated experience in designing, preparing, and performing demonstrations as required.


 

Preferred:
  • Skill in prioritizing and organizing workload; and maintaining, directing, and controlling a large laboratory operation. 
  • Experience with planning and utilizing laboratory space efficiently and safely. 
  • Familiarity with standard inventory practices in order to be able to determine supply needs and fill those needs within budgetary constraints and through established distribution channels. 
  • Experience maintaining accurate and complete records for reagent preparation and inventory list of chemicals, glassware, equipment, and other supplies. 
  • Knowledge of applicable University policies and procedures
