DESCRIPTION
As an Organized Research Unit of UC San Diego, the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) is a leader in data-intensive computing and cyberinfrastructure, providing resources, services, and expertise to the national research community, industry and academia. Cyberinfrastructure refers to an accessible, integrated network of high-performance computing resources and expertise, focused on accelerating scientific inquiry and discovery. SDSC supports hundreds of multidisciplinary programs spanning a wide variety of domains, from earth sciences and biology to astrophysics, bioinformatics, and health IT.
The SDSC Sherlock Division delivers high performance production cyberinfrastructure and policy, business, operational, and technology advice supporting information technology research and development, for federal and state agencies, academia including University of California (UC) and industry partners. The Sherlock division operates Sherlock Cloud, which provides a managed multi Cloud solution that complies with Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA), Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and NIST Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) compliant requirements.
The Division primarily focuses on building cyberinfrastructure for government, academia and research community that offers a multitude of high-touch, value-added, turnkey solutions that span Cloud Computing, Compliance, Cybersecurity, Big Data Management, Analytics and Data Science. The experts in Sherlock Division have developed and deployed specific services designed to provide a solid and secure foundation for a wide range of research and business initiatives. The Division currently supports the federal government including, Department of Defense (DoD), National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Science Foundation (NSF), and a number of academic and UC entities, and complies with the specific requirements of each organization.
Having wide-ranging experience, the Cloud Solutions Architect will apply IT architecture concepts to resolve the most complex issues with campus / medical center / OP-wide, institution-wide and / or multi-institutional impact. The incumbent will also have responsibility for the stewardship of the campus / medical center / OP overall IT architecture and / or is recognized as the campus / medical center / OP top expert in one or more technology areas of high criticality to a large scale enterprise architecture; as well as work on most complex issues with little or no campus / medical center / OP precedent where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors.
Reporting to the Sherlock Division Director, the Cloud Solutions Architect is a member of the Cloud Infrastructure and Platforms team and is primarily responsible for a broad range of activities in support of driving innovation within the core competencies of the division. The incumbent will provide expert knowledge of public cloud computing platforms include AWS, Azure and GCP. S/he will be responsible for performance by monitoring, maintaining, administering, developing, and testing computing, network, and application components related to large, complex computing platforms used within the Sherlock Division; work with researchers on strategies, then translate strategies into architectural goals; and confer with the Sherlock Division leadership to achieve consensus on technical architectural direction. Additionally, s/he will analyze and propose new systems and technologies; balance workload across multiple Sherlock Division programs/projects; develop and maintain a disaster recovery plan for systems as well as data recovery plan in the event of a natural disaster; and exhibit technical mastery of enterprise system management, cloud computing, network architecture, operations and security, Windows operating systems, emerging computing technologies and architectures and the interrelationship of all. Additionally, the incumbent will provide support to the development of multi-cloud computing infrastructure per the vision of the Sherlock Division.
As a Cloud Solutions Architect, be responsible for designing and implementing turnkey solutions that span the entire data lifecycle pipeline including ingesting & integration, storage, compute and applications. The incumbent will leverage public cloud platforms to orchestrate the necessary micro-services to provide fit-for-purpose solutions that support big data, analytics and dates science use cases; work closely with internal and customer teams to create migration and testing plans for their existing applications utilizing standard cloud services that maximize automation and focuses on an infrastructure as code methodology; and explore new technologies and patterns to see how they can be used to improve our code base, and work with teams to vet and implement the new designs and enhancements.
The Cloud Solutions Architect will collaborate with other Enterprise Architects, Infrastructure Engineers, DevOps Engineers, Security Analysts, ENS Engineers, Business Analysts, Service Owners, Project Managers as well as leadership and customer stakeholders to provide cost-effective, functionally optimal and architecturally sound solutions to divisional needs driving toward implementation of the architecture road map in support of Sherlock's Strategic Plan. The Cloud Solutions Architect will promote implementation of industry best practices, perform vendor education and analysis, review business process/technology alignment, and develop roadmaps for business/technology optimization.

QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with public cloud providers such as AWS, GCP, and Azure. Strong focus and understanding of public Cloud platforms services, and software architectural patterns.Advanced experience with cloud deployment technologies such as Terraform, CloudFormation, and CDK.
Advanced experience writing and editing the most complex scripts used to perform system maintenance and Required administration. Advanced programming and/or scripting skills in AWS CDK, Terraform, Python, Ruby, Java and Powershell scripting languages.
Demonstrated skills associated with adapting equipment and technology to serve user needs. Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users and dependent / related functions. Expert in cross-platform OS and application integration (Linux/Windows).
Knowledge of software, database, infrastructure or other IT function. Knowledge relating to the design and development of software across the organization. Experience with a variety of databases, including relational and document stores utilizing AWS RDS services, and similar offerings across GCP and Azure.
Extensive experience administering DNS Servers; LDAP (Windows Active Directory including Domain Controllers), PKI Architecture, 2-factor Authentication (including RSA appliances and Azure AD), Web proxies, and SMTP servers. Extensive knowledge and technical expertise with the Microsoft Active Directory, Windows computing/network environments and Windows scripting languages.
