DESCRIPTION
Under the close supervision of the Captain or Chief Mate, or in their absence, the senior deck officer present, under instruction stand watches at sea, act as lookout, and maintain an assigned cleaning station aboard ship. Assist in the maintenance of the deck department area while at sea. Perform unskilled deck duties handling lines, transferring and securing gear and equipment, performing general painting, chipping, cleaning and scrubbing of the deck, repair and splice lines and polish equipment and fixtures. In port, stand security watches and perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Basic knowledge of principles of good seamanship with respect to launching and recovering small boats, ships ground tackle, deck machinery, rigging of wire rope and synthetic lines.
Thorough knowledge of principles and good practices of marine maintenance with respect to proper preparation and preservation of steel ships, small boats and deck machinery.
Basic knowledge of math calculations.
Effective interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and in writing, with diverse ship board personnel.
Basic understanding of requirements for maintaining inventory of deck stores and supplies for vessels.
Knowledge of safety precautions and regulations regarding watch standing and related responsibilities.
Basic ability to stand wheel watch at sea and security watch in port.
Knowledge of and skills necessary for safe handling of small boats under oars and power.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Ability to properly prime and paint.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Ability and willingness to go to sea for extend periods of time.
Ability to pass physical examination and U.S. Coast Guard (DOT) regulations for Chemical Drug and Alcohol testing.
