What are the responsibilities and job description for the Business Development Officer position at UCLA?
The UCLA Technology Development Group seeks an organized, proactive individual with at least two years relevant professional experience in one or more of the areas of biopharma intellectual property strategy and portfolio management, intellectual property licensing, venture capital, business development and/or product development in a university, or biopharma company to serve as a member of the team of UCLA life sciences Business Development Officers (BDOs). The Life Sciences BDO must have a strong scientific background, with an Advanced degree (MSc or PhD) in a Life Sciences discipline (Biology, Biochemistry, Neuroscience, etc.) OR 10 years with specific technology transfer experience or industry experience.
The duties of the BDOs include the following: (1) Building and Maintaining Relationships with campus constituents and external stakeholders; (2) Managing Campus Intellectual Property; (3) Negotiating and Documenting Agreements related to University Intellectual Property; (4) Marketing University Intellectual Property; and (5) Other Duties as may be assigned by supervisor or Associate Vice Chancellor.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal, written and listening) to obtain relevant information, transmit relevant information at the appropriate level of detail and frequency, to know when to question for additional detail and sufficient diplomacy and tact to deliver difficult messages.

Experience with reviewing legal documents and negotiating terms of agreements. Ability to read legal documents and identify deal consistent and inconsistent points and ability to succinctly and accurately summarize negotiated deal points in a term sheet that might be used by others.
