The Carolina Center for Behavioral Health is a 156-bed licensed, private psychiatric facility located on 13 acres in Greer, SC, conveniently close to I-85. Specializing in psychiatric programs and substance use treatment, inpatient programs are offered for adolescents, adults and senior adults. There are also intensive outpatient programs (IOP) and partial hospitalization programs (PHP) for patients with psychiatric and co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders. Position Summary:
We are currently seeking a full-time Mental Health Technician who will provide direct patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Responsibilities include the provision of a safe and therapeutic milieu, crisis intervention and assistance with activities of daily living. The Mental Health Technician must demonstrate flexibility for reassignment to units providing care to varied populations including male and female, adolescents and adults as well as dually diagnosed adults.
SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES: To provide direct patient care under the supervision of an RN to adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. To ensure the safety and well being of these patients and to support the maintenance of therapeutic milieu.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Conducts 15-minute rounds on patients per policy.
- Assist patients who are prone to fall when walking or sitting.
- Safety Champion
- Participate in restraint and seclusion of patients when required.
- Push patients in wheelchairs when required.
- Supports facility service excellence standards.
- Complies with facility safety, infection control and security program.
- Maintains desirable pattern of attendance, punctuality, and productivity.
- Maintains a safe, orderly, and therapeutic physical environment for patients.
- Carries patient luggage.
- Assist patients if an emergency evacuation is required.
- Give baths to patients and change patient’s briefs, when required.
- Cleaning/disinfection of high touch areas and other areas, as required.
- Participate in implementing patients’ treatment plans by; (a) monitoring patients’ progress; (b) communicating information regarding patients’ behavior to other members of treatment team; (c) maintains communication with patient, family members and referral sources in patient’s interest; (d) facilitates or co-facilitates didactic groups, community meetings, or drug or alcohol education groups; (e) encouraging and facilitating patients’ participation in therapeutic activities; (f) supervising patients to ensure their safety and their involvement in treatment; (g) providing input during shift report.
- Attends mandatory training
- Maintain patient, program, department and related documentation.
- Participates in treatment planning: (a) helps identify patients’ problems, needs and strengths; (b) suggesting modifications to treatment plan based on observations of patients’ behavior; (c) providing input into discharge planning.
- Accompany patients as assigned (i.e. take patients to cafeteria, smoke breaks, etc).
- Help maintain the therapeutic milieu on the unit, including, but not limited to, to facilitation of community groups
- Orient new patients to unit program and milieu.
- Carry out general nursing care assistance, appropriate to the patient population as assigned and supervised by nurse in charge.
- Carry out clerical and administrative assignment to support patient care and department and organization operations.
- Participates in activities which enhance development of professional knowledge and skills.
- Demonstrates conduct in keeping with CCBH’s ethical standard
- Other duties as assigned

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS AT ENTRY:
High school level reading and writing skills. Acceptable oral and written communication skills/ legible handwriting skills. Ability to maintain information as highly confidential. Professional telephone etiquette and customer service skills by phone and face to face are critical. Certification as nursing assistant or patient care technician and/or familiarity with medical and psychological terminology preferred. Skills in dealing courteously with the public and other staff within the organization. A basic knowledge of human behavior or principles of psychology will be very useful as well as skills in prioritizing and in managing time.
In the absence of any of these qualifications upon hire, employee must demonstrate the ability to learn these concepts and develop these skills within a reasonable time frame via the organization’s orientation and training program.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENT OF THE JOB:
Ability to exercise self-control in potentially volatile situation such as being verbally or physically confronted in a threatening or aggressive manner. Must be able to work and concentrate amidst distractions such as noise, conversation and foot traffic. Ability to handle interruptions often and be able to move from one task to another. Must be flexible and not easily frustrated in dealing with differences of opinions. Able to assist in patient restraints and seclusions.
Ability to stop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, and be able to perceive the attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature, and/or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of the fingertips. Ability to express and exchange ideas via spoken work during activities in which they must convey detain or important spoken instructions to others accurately, sometimes quickly and loudly. Hearing to perceive the nature of sound with no less than 40 db loss @ Hz,1000 Hz, and 2000 Hz with or without correction; ability to perceive detailed information through oral communication and to make fine discriminations in sound. Perform repetitive motions with wrists, hands and fingers.
Individual must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force and the able to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Work required a minimum standard of visual acuity with or without correction that will enable people in the role to complete administrative and clerical tasks and visually observe patients on the unit and in therapeutic activities. While worker may possible be subjected to temperature changes, the worker is generally not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions as the work is predominantly inside.
