Responsibilities

Assist with the day to day NSA ARM Climate Research operations; duties include technical functions such as scientific equipment setup, technical support and maintenance; provide Inupiat expert advice on local customs.

 

Essential Functions:

 

• Monitor/track installed instruments/equipment for field operation on a daily or weekly basis as required; conduct on-site repairs as necessary.

• When new instruments are added to the site, learn normal operation of those instruments immediately

• Assist with the setup of scientific instruments/equipment prior to on-site/field operational use; includes (un)packing, (un)installing and tracking/monitoring of shipping.

• Assist with operational readiness by checking instruments/equipment/computers for safety, calibration and/or troubleshooting before launching operations; may include custom building or fabricating special parts/mounts or other as needed.

• Must be able to build Ethernet cables and similar.

• Recommend/advice/propose alternative solutions to set up operations, instruments or equipment on a case by case basis.

• Respond to Instrument Mentor requests to check instruments.

• Work with mentors if repairs or modifications are needed to ensure proper instrument operation and data collection.

• Respond to project IT department requests for installation of software patches.

• Assist IT with network and connectivity issues for instruments and the overall site.

• Provide knowledge about Inupiat cultural customs, weather conditions and land/sea/air animals.

• Exercise judgment and local knowledge to provide assistance to non-UICS project staff and site visitors on safe working in the Arctic, particularly with regard to winter travel and outdoor work, operations on sea or lake ice, and polar bear threat.

• Monitor the site and access for safe conditions, including weather issues, issues with access roads (snow drifting, potholes, washouts), electrical safety issues. Report or repair unsafe conditions as appropriate.

• Operate heavy equipment for operations and instrument/equipment setup prior to or post deployment; including snow removal or debris from premises as needed.

• Must be able to obtain a CDL with Hazmat endorsement.

• Will require travel to obtain specialized training for specific types of heavy equipment.

• Assist/guide and/or provide technical support to non-UICS project staff and visiting scientists with instrument deployment, field work, and operations set up; includes safety gear and gun safety training.

• Document nature of visit and on site or field safety training.

• Create/maintain activity logs or data entry into the database management: inputting/tracking instruments, field data entries, quality checks on instruments for calibration & cleaning, and other related data acquisition or processes.

• Update instrument mentors and other project personnel via email or other means.

• Prepare/submit/track/document maintenance/repair order requests for processing; includes proper coding of invoices.

• File project documentation, paper and electronic, as needed.

• Participate in biweekly project teleconferences.

• Complete annual firearms and first aid training. Complete other types of safety training, including pressure vessel safety, scaffolding, fall protection and confined space entry training.

• Interact with clients and other project personnel in a courteous manner.

• Must be self-motivated, able to work with minimum supervision, and possess good communication skills

Qualifications

Required Experience:

 

• A minimum of four (4) years of relevant work experience• Proficiency in the use of hand tools• Basic experience with computers and software such as Excel and WordPreferred Experience:• Experience with wire and cable termination, cable routing, and rack mount equipment installationPreferred Experience:• Experience in the use of electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes and multi-meters to troubleshoot and repair electronic circuits and electrical equipment

 

Physical Demands:

 

• Ability to climb low to moderate heights• Routinely lift up to 50lbs, occasionally up to 100lbs• Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.• Using hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials, and manipulating things.• Servicing, repairing, adjusting, and testing machines, devices, moving parts, and equipment that operate primarily on the basis of mechanical (not electronic) principles.

 

Environmental Conditions:

 

• Ability to withstand extreme temperatures (cold and hot).• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, and outside weather conditions.• The employee is frequently exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles.• The noise level in the work environment is moderate.• The wearing of appropriate personal protective equipment mitigates risks associated with these conditions and is mandatory.• May be working in close proximity to moving equipment.
