Job Summary
The Sterile Processing Technician organizes, directs, and performs activities related to cleaning, sterilizing, storing, maintenance and distribution of equipment and instruments in the Sterile Processing Department
Job Specific Responsibilities
Daily assignments may include but are not limited to :
- Process and package instruments and instrument sets to be used in surgical procedures
- Properly package and load items on the carriage for sterilization
- Store, issue, and track equipment; this includes delivery and pick up from various departments
- Operate, monitor, and exchange the Detergent Management System
- Operate all SPD equipment in a safe and efficient manner
- Troubleshoot and resolve problems with sterilizers
- Properly test equipment and document following sterility assurance guidelines
- All other assigned related duties
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED
Skills and Abilities
- Experience in Sterile Processing and / or Instrumentation Room training helpful
- Computer skills required. Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (including, but not limited to, Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.
Ability to learn Cerner, IDX, and other applicable hospital-based programs as they pertain to the required job duties
Medical terminology helpful
Interaction with Other Departments and Other Relationships
Frequent interaction with various departments throughout the hospital
Physical Capabilities
Work is of heavy demand. Walking and standing most of the time on duty. The technician will occasionally be required to push or pull charts weighting as much as 100 pounds pounds and lifting items as heavy as 50 pounds.
Frequent reaching and bending required. Frequent handling of instruments is necessary. Sight, speech and hearing are a must.
Days and hours of duty will vary.
Environmental / Working Conditions
This position is subject to inside environmental conditions. Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.
