Primary Purpose of Position
This position serves as the Director of Academic Affairs Human Resources and applies a broad knowledge of business and human resources management practices for the Academic Affairs division, as well as the AAHR unit. Serves as the campus lead for faculty human resources management supporting the faculty employment life cycle which includes recruitment through separations, compensation, leaves and other actions. Additionally, this position oversees Academic Affairs staff-related human resources matters in support of the central Office of Human Resources. Completes comprehensive and topic-specific human resources reporting for the division and faculty-only reporting for the campus and UNC System Office such as quarterly reports, the annual HR Management Flexibility Report and ad hoc requests. Supervises staff. Delegated substantial signature authority by administrator.

Minimum Education/Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and three years of experience in the area of assignment, of which at least one is supervisory or in a lead-worker capacity; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

University Preferred Qualifications:

Graduation from a four-year college or university and at least five years of program administration experience, including at least two years of supervision; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Essential Job Duties
  • Applies a broad knowledge of human resources, position budgeting, and business
    management as the Director of Human Resources for the Division of Academic Affairs. With a student-centered focus, connects academic programmatic needs to human resources management in terms of organizational planning, process improvements, consults and analyses, training, and compliance integrity efforts.


  • Serves as the HR functional lead within the Office of Academic Affairs with direct responsibility for faculty personnel management and additional oversight of staff personnel consults and related services working in coordination with the Office of Human Resources. Manages position-related budgeting and compensation actions, reporting, and analysis.

  • Supervises interprets, or has authority to apply HR policies in colleges and service units within the division, particularly those associated with faculty employment, although a working knowledge of staff employment policies, procedures, and actions also applies. Completes, coordinates, or recommends policy reviews and updates associated with the Academic Personnel Policies and Procedures Handbook.

  • Works in close coordination with business officers in colleges and service units within the division and with officers and leaders in the Office of Human Resources, Institutional Research, Office of Assessment and Accreditation, University Budget Office, Office of the Controller, Grants and Contracts Administration, FADO, Summer Programs/Teaching and Learning Connection, Legal Affairs, and the Office of the Chancellor, among others. Holds delegated or proxy signature authority as directed by the Associate Provost.

Other Work Responsibilities
FACULTY EMPLOYMENT LIFE-CYCLE - Serves as the functional lead for faculty personnel management supporting the full faculty employment life cycle which includes recruitment through separations, compensation, leaves, RPT and TFPR review cycle management, and other actions. Oversees direct report(s) with staff employment policies and procedures, consulting services, and HR actions responsibilities.

REPORTING and ANALYSIS - Adeptly anticipate leadership information and planning needs and provide options and recommendations as data-driven decision-support. Completes a range of comprehensive and topic-specific personnel reporting for the division and faculty-only reporting for the division and campus and for the UNC System Office (e.g. quarterly reports, the annual Management Flexibility Survey, and ad hoc requests). Deliverables include narrative summaries, visualizations, dashboards, and various presentation modes and formats.

SUPERVISOR - Supervises staff and completes periodic and annual reviews, provides ongoing coaching and feedback, and administers corrective or disciplinary action if needed.

TRAINING and DEVELOPMENT -Set strategic direction for division-wide development of divisional business officers and their teams regarding faculty personnel management; collaborate with campus and external partners to benchmark and implement best practices. Develops or directs the development of, and conducts training and development offerings. Establishes and maintains excellent rapport with a variety of stakeholders and leaders ensuring a high level of service quality and continuity. Highly effective communicator (written, verbal, presentations). Ensures information, materials or tool kits, and systems are accessible, streamlined, integrated, and appropriately targeted for a variety of users; ensure technological adaptations are user-friendly, intuitive, and easy to navigate to help ensure efficiency, effectiveness, and compliance integrity.

CHANGE MANAGEMENT Researches understands, develops plans for action, and communicates a progressive, forward-thinking approach to faculty personnel management. Serves as a highly capable contributor and facilitator in meetings directly influencing or leading change management efforts, often in partnership.

Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Human Resources, or Public Administration with 5 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Prefer experience as a manager or senior administrator at a public university with the role scope being college- or division-wide, or central office campus-wide level(s). A master’s degree is a plus but not required. PHR or SHRM certification is a plus but not required.

The desired candidate will have strong management and leadership experience, in managing teams, programs, and processes. Further, this individual will have extensive knowledge of university and state policies governing position management, faculty personnel management, contract administration, benefits, payroll, and compensation. In addition, the desired candidate will have advanced knowledge and skills in Excel, Google Sheets, data analysis, data management, data integrity, workflow management, advanced communication, and advanced information dissemination skills. The desired candidate will develop, interpret, apply, and implement new policies and procedures.
