Position Summary | The School seeks to hire a teaching assistant professor to support education, research, and consultation for public defenders, assigned counsel, and contract attorneys for indigent defendants and respondents. This position will focus on civil proceedings including abuse and neglect, termination of parental rights, civil commitment, guardianship, child support contempt, and juvenile delinquency. Work includes designing curriculum, recruiting instructors, administering training programs with assistance of School of Government staff, and collaborating with other organizations providing relevant training and education. The person will advise indigent defenders via email and phone and engage in research and writing as needed. Written work may include resources such as courtroom guides, blog posts, online materials, and bulletins. This position is part of the Public Defense Education (PDE) group at the School of Government. The PDE group collaborates with the North Carolina Office of Indigent Defense Services to create high-quality, cost-effective indigent defense education to ensure that indigent defenders have the qualifications, training, and support they need to be effective. The PDE group serves more than 3,000 attorneys and other providers of indigent defense services. Work is centered in Chapel Hill but requires occasional travel and consultation around the state. Faculty appointments are year-round (rather than the nine-month academic year). |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | J.D., excellent writing and communication skills, strong academic background, and a demonstrated commitment to public service required. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Experience working in some or all the civil fields indicated is preferred. |
