Job Description

The Compensation Manager will have the opportunity to implement Uncommon School's compensation philosophy, practices, and procedures and play a key role in helping us build out our Total Rewards team. The Compensation Manager will partner with regional leadership, our Senior Director of Total Rewards, and Head of Talent to manage core compensation policies, programs, and processes (including job evaluation, salary structure development, external benchmarking, etc.). This person will also play a meaningful role in the analysis, design, implementation, and advancement of Uncommon’s holistic employee value proposition and Total Rewards strategy. Given that compensation and benefits represent Uncommon’s largest budget line item, their work and analysis will be used to provide guidance to Uncommon leaders when making strategic financial planning decisions. The ideal candidate is thoughtful, systematic, and cares deeply about organizational equity and ensuring that our people are taken care of so that they can do their best work for our students and communities.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

Compensation

  • Implement and manage compensation structures and job architecture for all functions to ensure equitable employee compensation practices. This includes day-to-day management of pay scales for multiple employee groups and across multiple geographical regions.
  • Evaluate existing jobs against internal and external benchmarks to determine market competitiveness, and review proposed offers and salary adjustments to ensure pay practices are aligned with organizational philosophies and policies and federal and state requirements.
  • Iterate and document systems and procedures to improve operational efficiency and guarantee adherence to organizational policies and ensure equity and transparency of Uncommon's compensation practices.
  • Project manage the annual salary planning process and create training and materials for regional and school leadership to successfully complete their steps.
  • Regularly provide workforce analyses to assess quality of compensation plans and programs. Generate reports, analyze data, summarize and present results as needed.

Total Rewards

  • Support the process of developing and implementing a total rewards strategy, and play a key role in creating and maintaining the systems and structures needed to support the strategy.
  • Partner with Talent teams, Finance, and others on a variety of projects including program design, analysis, budgeting, and implementation of new total rewards programs as needed.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience
  • At least 3 years of increasingly responsible experience in compensation management or financial analysis roles that included benefits and/or compensation cost models
  • At least 2 years of experience providing support for staff members, managers and/or team leaders around compensation and/or benefits
  • Experience creating or significantly altering/improving cost models (has done more than execute on previously built models)
  • Outstanding analytical skills, with significant experience in efficiently gathering and manipulating data to perform quantitative and qualitative data analyses with analytical tools, especially MS Excel
  • Familiarity with compensation and benefits work and/or financial analysis within budgets 
  • Direct experience with project management, preferably in process improvement
  • Strong ability to communicate rationale for decisions in writing and to explain analyses to hiring managers, team leaders, and members of the Finance team
  • Ability to learn and be proactive in a fast-paced, dynamic, and entrepreneurial environment
  • Consistently motivated to achieve success, marked by perseverance, humility, and a positive outlook in the face of challenges
  • Bachelor’s degree required

Preferred Skills/Abilities

  • SHRM, PHR or CCP certification
  • Deep expertise in compensation work (creating and managing systems and structures to support compensation philosophy and policies
  • Previous experience in a K-12 setting, educational organization, or nonprofit strongly preferred
