Union Gospel Mission has been transforming the hungry, homeless and addicted in Portland since 1927. Our mission is Through the transformative power of Jesus Christ, we open life-changing pathways to people experiencing homelessness, hunger, addiction, and abuse. We serve homeless men and women, and homeless women with children through our LifeChange recovery communities, and we also provide life essentials to those experiencing homelessness at our downtown location and across the greater Portland Metro area through our Search Rescue mobile outreach bringing food, clothing, supplies and connection to those living in camps and on the streets. We are a Christ-centered organization motivated to act, to bring help and to share hope out of our love and service to God and love for our neighbor.

Now, to help serve and transform even more lives we are adding an additional full-time Major Gifts Officer to help lead our organization in building purposeful relationships with donors who believe, like we do, that compassionate people working together can improve the lives of the men, women and children we serve.

The right candidate will be a person who shares our values to love God and our neighbors and will have heart and passion to connect people to our mission. We prefer to bring on a person with development experience, though experience is not required. We will provide training for this position.

Our headquarters are based in Portland, Oregon, and we have LifeChange Centers in Portland and Beaverton. The development officer will manage their duties from our Portland office and will also be able to work from a home office.

This is a pivotal time at the Mission as we are expanding by building a new LifeChange Center for homeless Women and Their Children, we are expanding mobile mission services across the Portland Metro area and we are seeking new, innovative ideas to advance the Mission and benefit those we serve. Union Gospel Mission Position Description

POSITION TITLE: Development Officer

REPORTS TO: Development Director

SUPERVISES: N/A

LOCATION: 3 NW Third Avenue Portland, OR

STATUS: Full-Time, requires some morning and evening meetings

WAGE: $60,000 to $85,000 annually plus benefits

OVERALL POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Development Officer works as part of the development team to identify, cultivate, administrate, and manage a portfolio of major donors. This person will build relationships with and ask for gifts from existing donors including individuals, businesses, churches, and organizations and work to identify new major donor prospects.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

· Design and execute an annual major donor strategy and successfully execute the plan to raise funds for the organization.

· Create and manage a portfolio of existing major donors and prospects and maintain relationships with each person keeping them informed about our mission, programs, needs and giving opportunities.

· Create a “Women in Philanthropy” program for the mission to generate funds for the mission.

· Assist the leadership and board in major donor relations as needed.

· Research donors and prospects and maintain good donor records.

· Identify and cultivate new major donor prospects.

· Prepare donor proposals and reports.

· Support Mission fundraising activities including campaigns, annual fund, events, and other activities as assigned by supervisor.

· Represent the Mission in a knowledgeable and professional manner to potential supporters and the public at events including business, groups, and churches.

· Assist in creating development marketing tools.

· Learn and be competent in using the donor development software.

· Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

· Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent preferred, but not required.

· Three or more years of experience in non-profit fundraising preferred, but similar experience will be considered.

· Strong relational skills, outgoing, high energy level with strong presentation and communication skills.

· Passionate about our mission and the desire to serve.

· Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

· Excellent written communication skills.

· Own or have access to a vehicle for work purposes.

· Have high speed internet, a computer and printer capable of interfacing with office software.

· Familiarity with MS Office is essential.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • A criminal history and background check are required and must be successfully completed.
  • Ability to effectively handle multiple tasks as assigned.
  • Ability to walk up and down steps.

Character: Strong commitment to the vision and values of Union Gospel Mission, have a passion for the gospel, and a desire to serve the homeless, broken, and addicted. Must be a follower of Jesus Christ and actively involved in a local Christian church. Must adhere to UGM’s statement of faith and standards of conduct.
