Position Purpose
the Director of Graphic Design leads the graphic design team while supporting the conceptual development, design and execution of creative projects and branding for the USL. The Director of Graphic Design aids in communicating the USL’s creative vision to the league office, clubs, and partners. They are responsible for supervising the entire design process and creative design decisions.
Duties and Responsibilities
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
- Oversee and manage the USL’s visual creative services, specifically, brand identity and graphic design.
- Collaborate across departments to direct and produce creative materials including, but not limited to, social and web graphics, digital templates, marketing collateral, event signage, merchandise, and corporate presentations.
- Create original graphics and modify existing artwork to be used across a variety of USL properties and platforms.
- Develop new graphic packages (logos, treatments, graphic designs, templates) for marquee events, marketing initiatives, and content programming.
- Assist in asset management, including editing, uploading, and organizing content. Keep files up to date and ensure appropriate metadata tagging for streamlined use by multiple stakeholders.
- Create and guide external designers on merchandise concepts and capsule collections.
- Collaborate with and monitor the full USL content group to ensure consistency in branding and visual storytelling.
- Employ and enforce the organization’s graphics standards, techniques, methods, and style guides.
- Assume responsibility for organizing and maintaining the organization’s visual content calendars for recurring projects and campaigns.
- Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
You are a seasoned graphic designer with a background in understanding visual brand identities and pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling. You have substantial experience making creative assets that evoke emotion and encourages engagement. You are an innovator with a curious mindset. You have ideas popping into your head all the time and a track record of bringing those ideas to reality. You have experience getting into the details of content intentionality, the “why” behind what you’re creating, and you have an outlook on how it should look and feel. You have experience managing creative people and want to build a diverse, positive team of creators.
At the USL, you’ll be spanning the full spectrum of creative work, from strengthening and protecting our brands, to producing stunning storytelling about our clubs and players. You’ll help drive the USL -- and soccer -- forward and you’ll inspire fandom by leveraging all of your creative skills, talents, and imagination.
The ideal candidate has:
- BA/BFA Graphic Design, Communications Design, Graphic Arts, Advertising Design, or equivalent experience preferred.
- 5 years of relevant professional experience preferred.
- Expertise with Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign). After Effects knowledge a plus.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel).
- Passion for sports. Experience within the sports industry is a plus. Soccer knowledge and understanding is also a plus.
- Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, fluid, and deadline-driven environment.
- Proven ability to deliver fresh new ideas.
- Understanding of internet marketing, brand building, storytelling, content creation, & design
- A collaborative, detail-oriented, and organized approach to work, with a proven ability to follow up on and complete tasks on time.
- Self-motivation, patience, and the ability to work within a team environment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with team members, executives, member clubs, and external partners.
- Ability to implement content calendars & deliver on time.
- Can push self & others in a fast-changing environment.
- Positive attitude and strong work ethic a must.
- Ability to work as business needs require, which may include evenings, weekends, occasional holidays, and travel if / when necessary.
- Must have U.S. work authorization.
