Operations Long-Term Intern (2 positions)

Whether you work in Championship Administration or Operations, you will gain valuable experience and see firsthand how an exemplary golf championship is conducted.
The 122nd U.S Open Championship will be held at The Country Club, which will be hosting its’ fourth U.S. Open Championship and its 17th USGA championship, the most recent being the 2013 U.S. Amateur. Located minutes outside the historic city of Boston, the USGA will return to one of its founding clubs from 1894. Arguably one the most significant events in American golf history happened at The Country Club in 1913, where Francis Ouimet a local amateur, defeated top pros Harry Vardon and Ted Ray.
What You Can Expect:
The Operations interns will assist the United States Golf Association with the operations of the 2022 U.S. Open Championship, including advance set-up, Championship week responsibilities, and post-Championship breakdown.
Working at the U.S. Open, you will experience a fast-paced work environment. The candidate must have the ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks at one time. Each day brings new challenges, and the intern must have top-notch organizational and communication skills. The intern will find themselves working in a typical office environment as well as significant work done in exterior environments. The ability to handle physical tasks such as lifting boxes and manual labor spending extensive time in the sun should be expected. The weeks leading up to the Championship will require at least (60) hour work weeks and as the Championship grows closer, lengthen to (100 ) hours and will include weekends and holidays. An internship with the United States Golf Association and the 2022 U.S. Open Championship is a tremendous first step for a career in the fields of special event management and professional sports.
This is a paid internship with a housing stipend.
Essential Job Functions Include:
- Assist USGA staff with the preparation and set-up of on-site facilities (i.e., corporate hospitality, media center, vendor compounds, volunteer village, office trailers, etc.)
- Work with the USGA staff on the inventory and distribution of operational equipment (chairs, drink stands, furniture, office equipment, tables, water coolers, etc.)
- Take the lead as point person for specific vendors and oversee their progress during the facility construction and tear-down processes
- Assist vendors and USGA staff with tear-down and clean-up procedures following the completion of the Championship
- Work with USGA staff on installation and removal of Championship signage
- Provide USGA staff with administrative office support
- Assist other U.S. Open departments with support, as necessary
What You Bring to the USGA:
- Able to work long and strenuous hours (100 hour work weeks) including holidays and weekends
- Able to lift heavy items (chairs, copiers, coolers, tables, etc.) (50 lbs)
- Must remain flexible with an ever-changing environment
- Able to think logically and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously
- Good interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to effectively express ideas and interact with a wide array of individuals in an exemplary manner consistent with USGA values
- General computer literacy (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, etc.)
- Able to assemble, disassemble, repair, or modify structures and work with various tools and equipment (including but not limited to saws, drills, hammers, nails, screwdrivers, paint sprayers, box cutters, knives, motor vehicles/trucks/golf carts/etc.)
- Ensures a neat, clean, and safe work environment by cleaning work areas and discarding materials in the proper manner
- Compliance with all USGA safety and operations policies, procedures, and practices
- Prior experience in golf tournament operations is preferred
- Exceptional work ethic
