The Hazardous Waste Manager, within Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) Services, provides consultation and programmatic direction on issues related to hazardous waste materials and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) solid waste disposal. The position has frequent oral and written communication with the campus administrators, faculty, professional staff (Ph.D., MD, Senior Researchers, Lab Technicians), facilities management, graduate and undergraduate students, and outside vendors. Thus, this position must communicate well with individuals and be able to provide reasonable and feasible guidance based on environmental and safety regulations. The work assignments are primarily based on maintaining compliance with applicable state and federal regulations and standards. The Hazardous Waste Manager must be familiar with the chemistry of hazardous materials and the regulatory complaint programs related to managing their fate from “cradle to grave”.

Key duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Managing all University programs related to hazardous materials and “solid” waste.

  • Providing consultation services to the campus.

  • Laboratory Safety

  • Training faculty, staff and students

  • Providing emergency response – must be able to respond to emergencies outside of normal business hours.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors Degree in Science, Environmental Science or Public Health or closely related field.

Demonstrated knowledge of various federal and state safety Hazardous Materials Regulations including those related to U.S. EPA, U.S. Department of Transportation and NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

Demonstrated experience (three years or greater) in hazardous waste management, laboratory safety or environmental compliance. A master’s degree in chemistry or environmental & occupational health may be substituted for this requirement.

Preferred Qualifications
Certification as a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or Registered Environmental Manager (REM).

A strong background in the chemistry of hazardous materials including a working knowledge of organic, inorganic and physical chemistry.

Experience in an academic, research or government environment.

Physical Demands

Must be able to wear personal protective equipment including respirators and a self-contained breathing apparatus.

Must be able to lift a minimum of 30 lbs (including hazardous materials containers and supplies).

$70,000 to $82,000
