The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Med - Preventive Medicine , is seeking a Scientist I. This Position will serve as a scientific writer and provide scientific assistance to the UAB Minority Health Equity Researcher Center (MHERC) and affiliated faculty and programs. The position will provide expertise in the areas of writing, editing, and developing materials associated with proposing, planning, implementing, and reporting of research studies. The position will also provide technical expertise to develop and initiate individual research projects, prepare funding applications, and communicate findings via manuscript writing and presentations. The position may also oversee some scientific activities associated with research projects and assist with training/education programs.

General Responsibilities
- To employ a broad knowledge of principles, practices and procedures in a particular field of specialization.
- To plan, coordinate and conduct research.
- Integrates published concepts and findings, including the methods and approaches of previous scientific studies and reports.
- Generates scientific papers for publications and presentations.
- Develops programs, educational materials, plans scientific symposiums and seminars, and develops reports regarding ongoing research projects with a significant level of independence.
- Develops protocols and designs new research studies.
- Develops grant applications and manuscripts.
- Represents faculty in discussion of research projects with internal and external collaborators.
- Facilitates submission of grant applications according to funder guidelines.
- Researches and identifies new funding opportunities (federal, foundation, national, etc.). Collaborates with investigators regarding potential funding submissions.
- Conducts reviews of scientific journals and literature for applicable data and recent developments in health disparities/health equity research.
- Analyzes and integrates findings to recommend new research projects, study protocols, changes to existing protocols, and new methodologies.
- Assists with development and delivery of training/educational programs.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Doctor of Philosophy, D.V.M. or M.D. degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience
- OR M.D. and Master's degree.
- OR Master's degree and four (4) years of related experience
- OR Bachelor's degree and six (6) years of related experience
Preferences
- PhD is preferred in the field of study of Social/Behavioral Sciences, Public Health, or related field.
- Must have demonstrated scientific writing ability to convey complex ideas and processes in compelling and informative ways.
- Must have prior experience with large, extramural funded research projects.
