Departmental Overview
Our mission is to develop and maintain a diverse living collection of plants to support teaching and worldwide research in plant biology, further the conservation of plant diversity, and promote public understanding and appreciation of plants and the natural environment.
The 34-acre UC Botanical Garden is one of the most diverse landscapes in the world, with over 10,000 kinds of plants including many rare and endangered species. Organized geographically, the Garden features 9 regions of naturalistic plantings, along with a major collection of California native plants. The Garden was established in 1890 and its living collections are invaluable resources for international research and conservation.

Responsibilities
Curatorial Records
Manage the plant records database; evaluate plants' suitability for acquisition, accession plants, update nomenclature, determine status of rare plants, research plant habitats, acquire collection data and document museum specimens, prepare collection exhibits.
Assist researchers with provision of scientific specimens and their data.
Conservation Program
Research plant species and populations, conduct field studies, serve as additional liaison with agency personnel.
Seed Exchange Program
Run international seed exchange program with over 400 institutions, document restrictions on use of these seeds.
Other duties as assigned
Supervise and train volunteers and graduate student research positions, participate in preparation and review of publications.
Assist with grant proposal preparation.
Answer public inquiries based on botanical knowledge and expertise.
Drive to areas within the garden and potentially off-site, as needed.
Required Qualifications
Training in botany or a related field and training in botanical taxonomy and/or equivalent training or experience..
Incumbent must know or have the ability to learn complex museum record policies and procedures.
Experience utilizing technological systems or tools for the purpose of entering, retrieving and running reports.
Demonstrated analytical skills, with an ability to tell stories with data.
Ability to work effectively in collaborative environments, but able to successfully work as an individual without direct oversight.
Ability to manage duties to ensure required tasks are completed in a timely manner.
Education
Bachelor's degree in botany or a related field and/or equivalent training or experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated ability to juggle multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Ability and willingness to work independently and in teams.
Experience working with diverse groups, including the general public.
Experience testing and using databases.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office software tools (e.g. Excel, WORD).
Knowledge of or ability to learn the California flora.
Driving Required
A valid driver's license and DMV check for driving record is required.
Other Information
This is a career, 100% full-time, 40-hours per week appointment, eligible for full UC benefits.
