The Kirchstetter Lab in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley welcomes applications for an Assistant Research Engineer to conduct research on the sources of air pollution, emission control technologies, and novel measurement and analysis methods.

Appointment length:
This is a twelve month, 100% time appointment with the possibility of extension being subject to performance and budgetary approval. Anticipated start: March 2021 or until the position is filled.

Responsibilities:
The research engineer will join the research group of Prof. Thomas Kirchstetter with a focus on measuring and characterizing air pollution emission sources, and technologies and strategies for reducing air pollution exposures and impacts in urban and suburban regions, including novel approaches to deploying novel air pollution sensing technologies. The candidate will lead research studies to: develop and apply methods for quantifying on-road vehicle emissions, their evolution over time, and the efficacy of emission control technologies; deploy new and emerging low-cost air pollution sensors to quantify the spatial and temporal patterns in air pollution, especially in traditionally underserved communities; and explore new opportunities as related to increasing use of waste-to-energy and composting practices. The candidate will be expected to engage independently and directly in multiple research projects, set technical agendas, develop the technical vision for research objectives, present results at leading academic conferences, draft and revise technical papers and reports using sound scientific judgment, and prepare and make technical presentations at research and technical conferences. In addition, the candidate will facilitate interactions with other research organizations and/or groups to promote collaboration and enhance the impact of research results. Other responsibilities include identifying new funding opportunities, assisting with and leading proposal preparation, authoring peer-reviewed articles, and mentoring more junior researchers, including training on measurement techniques (e.g., calibration and use of air pollution analyzers) and laboratory and analytical methods in general.

Basic Qualifications (at the time of application):
• PhD or equivalent international degree

Preferred Qualifications:
• PhD in Environmental Engineering or related/relevant field
• 3 years of relevant experience that includes a leading role in conducting field and laboratory research
• Experience leading a team of researchers conducting multifaceted research projects and completing objectives on-time
• Experience contributing to grant writing and interacting with external sponsors (e.g., CARB, DOE)
• Superior academic performance and publication record
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and teamwork
• In depth experience with data acquisition, data management, and data analysis
• Demonstrated creativity and highly developed problem solving skills
• Broad experience in a laboratory environment
• Experience with air pollution sensor hardware and their data management platforms
