What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Network Engineer (flex-hybrid) position at University of California - Los Angeles Health?
Under the direction of the Manager of IT Network, the Senior Network Engineer is responsible for the configuration, implementation and support of network equipment, network software, daily operational incidents, service request tickets, network break/fix support, incident and technical escalations, network maintenance and maintenance support.
The Senior Network Engineer's role functions also include, but are not limited to enterprise project deliverables, project tasks, project documentation, build, installation, performance monitoring, optimization, troubleshooting and maintenance of a variety of systems of the network.
Duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- ensuring that policies, standards, procedures, and how-to documents are utilized and followed
- providing day-to-day support of the 24 x 7 production environment of ISS Enterprise network (core, distribution, wired & wireless access layers, cloud technologies, IPAM, DHCP, AAA, VoIP systems, WAN, Firewall/VPN, and network monitoring)
- staying abreast, learning, and supporting new network technologies as they are deployed to the UCLA Health environment
- participate in weekly rotational after-hours 24 x 7 on-call support and perform other assigned tasks as needed by departmental requirements
- applying expertise supporting routing and switching technologies in the data center and at the network edge
- supporting operational and projects across the enterprise network; this includes but is not limited to data center ACI, SD-WAN, edge SDN activities, and traditional routing and switching network environments
- responsible for maintaining expert knowledge of enterprise network automation and monitoring tools.
This is a flex-hybrid role which will require you to be onsite as required by operational need; there are no reimbursements for travel to "home office" location. Each employee must complete a FlexWork Agreement with their manager which will outline arrangement parameters and aids both parties in fully understanding expectations. Arrangements are regularly evaluated, and are subject to termination.
Salary offers are determined based on various factors including, but not limited to, qualifications, experience, and equity. The full salary range for this position is $95,900 - $222,100. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is approximately between the minimum and midpoint.

Hands-on data networking skills required including; IP & Ethernet routing and switching based network design, testing and implementations with in-depth knowledge of the OSI seven layer model and in depth familiarity with industry protocols including OSPF, HSRP, EIGRP, BGP, UDP, TCP/IP, Multicast, 802.1x, IPSec, Radius, TACACS
10. Experience in using network protocol analyzers and sniffers such as WireShark, Fluke tools and the ability to decipher packet captures
11. Proficient in configuring, deploying and maintaining Palo Alto and Cisco ASA firewalls.
12. Experience and knowledge of IEEE 802.11 wireless standards and Aruba wireless controllers
13. Support systems for network management including a working knowledge of Voice technologies. IP switching and routing architectures supporting VoIP and ISP services
14. Proficiency working with VLAN, VRF, HSRP, Port Security, Traffic Shaping, Priority Queuing, Class of Service (CoS)
15. An understanding of different cabling types: Multimode fiber, single-mode fiber, LC versus SC, 10/100/1000BaseX, Cat5, Cat5e, Cat6, RJ45
16. Experience using troubleshooting tools: traceroute, ping, mtr, nmap, netstat, ipconfig/ifconfig, iperf
17. Understand and apply IT Engineering Lifecycle methodology and practices
18. Ability to communicate the status of various systems to management and/or support personnel.
19. Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
20. Ability to prioritize and organize work assignments
21. Demonstrated experience with the following IT Network related products:
- Cisco
- Aruba
- Palo Alto
- Netscout
- Azure/AWS
- UNIX
