DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology (EEB), is devoted to the study of ecological and evolutionary processes in marine and terrestrial and freshwater environments. The past 30 years have seen several revolutions in our understanding of how the biological world works. Advances in both analytical and genetic methods have given us a far more sophisticated understanding of the complexities of ecological and evolutionary processes in the natural world. Biologists at UCSC have played and will continue to play an important part in these advances, and the campus programs offer unique educational opportunities in biology that feature small class sizes and extensive faculty-student interactions.

JOB SUMMARY

Under direct guidance of Roxanne Beltran, the Ano Nuevo Reserve Field Leader applies acquired skills and knowledge to provide scientific guidance and support in field research at Ano Nuevo Reserve. The incumbent also provides assistance with implementation, design and monitoring of research and teaching activities at Ano Nuevo Reserve.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $27.30/hour
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation rate for this role and should not offer a salary above the posted rate. The salary shown above is the rate the University reasonably expects to pay.

JOB DUTIES

75% - Research

  • Works with project leaders to coordinate research activities for key projects at Ano Nuevo Reserve. Creates study documentation, logs, and reports. Trains/oversees volunteers to ensure proper protocols are being utilized related to Pinniped colony monitoring, sample analysis, data collection, data entry, and instrumentation. Assists with background and literature review, if needed.

10% - Interpretation

  • Serves as a research ambassador to interpret research projects for classes and other members of the public that visit Ano Nuevo Reserve.

10% - Infrastructure

  • Works with project leaders to coordinate procurement and operation of instrumentation, infrastructure, and required field research commodities in support of research goals.

5% - Protocols/Procedures

  • Supports team in establishing procedures, logistics, and study protocols for remote field work and/or research studies.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Working knowledge of safety, legal, cultural and regulatory requirements relative to field research responsibility.
  • Working knowledge of research discipline, principles, concepts, analysis and / or operations being conducted at field / remote sites.
  • Working knowledge of local customs and operations at field / remote sites.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in ambiguous conditions, and take relevant responsible action, as required.
  • Proficient research and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population of research partners and project team members.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a team, and to meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strategic relationships and partnerships with remote research partners.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
  • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to perform essential physical job functions.
  • Ability to work long periods of time in wilderness conditions and to travel to remote areas.
  • Ability to perform work in a rugged physical environment and inclement weather with challenging infrastructure requirements.
  • Poison Oak is present. Incumbent must be willing to take the measures required to work in contact with and cut/remove poison oak.
  • Ability to work in conditions of variable temperature/weather with possible exposure to strong, unpleasant odors, high levels of noise and vibrations, and exposure to dust and allergens.
  • The ability to ascend/descend ladders with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary to move light to moderate objects up to 60 lbs., with or without accommodation.
  • Will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
  • Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus.
  • Will be required to wear a University provided uniform.
