Other Conditions: Extramural funds. Appointment to begin January 2025. The initial appointment is scheduled to run until December 30, 2025. Continuation is contingent upon project needs, satisfactory work performance, academic progress, and availability of funds.
Graduate Research Assistant (Center for Oral History: Korean POWs in Hawai'i during WWII)
The Center for Oral History (COH) in the Department of Ethnic Studies (College of Social Sciences) is seeking a graduate research assistant to work on its project: History of the Korean POW experience in Hawai'i during WWII. This person will be responsible to collect, document, and disseminate the experiences of POWs who were imprisoned in Hawai'i during WWII.
Duties and Responsibilities- Develop a historical timeline of key events surrounding Korean POWs during WWII.
- Create an annotated bibliography of sources.
- Transcribe and edit audio and video files of oral history interviews.
- Write research report of findings.
- Develop a spotlight of interviews for posting online.
- Attend staff meetings.
- Assist in daily management of the COH office.
- Assist with COH social media platforms.
- Other related duties as assigned.
- Classified, full-time (minimum 6 credits) graduate student in good academic standing (GPA of 3.0 or above) at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. Certificate and non-degree students are not eligible.
- One year of research experience (writing literature reviews or reports, conducting quantitative or qualitative research studies, etc.).
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Computer literacy (Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, Zoom).
- Ability to work outside of the normal working hours, including evening, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
- Working knowledge of the Korean language (written and spoken).
- Experience translating documents.
- Experience conducting and/or transcribing oral history interviews.
- Experience editing video and/or audio files.
- Experience using ArcGIS StoryMaps or doing web design.
- Experience copyediting.
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
