Duties and Responsibilities 

  1. *Serves as Theatre Technician (Production and Facilities Manager) for all departmental season productions.
  2. *Coordinates season planning and creates master production calendar in collaboration with the Theatre Manager.
  3. *Coordinates, oversees, and runs all production-related meetings.
  4. *In consultation with relevant production personnel, facilitates the hiring, assigning, scheduling, training, and overseeing of student-run crews and additional production hires.
  5. *Coordinates technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals, load-ins, and strikes for all departmental season productions.
  6. *Attends all technical and dress rehearsals for Mainstage productions to troubleshoot any problems that may arise.
  7. *Mediates and resolves production-related problems.
  8. *Serves as or supervises the "on-call technician"/"person in charge" for all productions.
  9. *In collaboration with the Department Chair, Theatre Manager, and Admin & Fiscal Support Specialist, develops a detailed budget for all scheduled productions.
  10. *Monitors and tracks expenditures, ensuring that all designers and shop managers are operating within allocated budgets.
  11. *In consultation with the Technical Director and Costume Shop Manager, coordinates contracts and monitors work hours for scene, electrics, and costume shop graduate assistants and paid hourly shop workers.
  12. *Oversees the process to obtain music, video, and play and musical rights, including but not limited to researching, contacting publishers/artists/writers, negotiating costs and coordinating the execution of contracts, for use by faculty and students.
  13. *Manages subscriptions of rights-free music and video databases and distributes requested material.
  14. Evaluates and coordinates Facilities use contracts and MOAs, and stewards the financial accounts payable and receivable for these events in collaboration with the Kennedy Theatre Facilities Committee.
  15. Manages UH's Sakamoto Catalog, which includes fully licensed performances, scenes, and book rights, by setting charges, working with the Office of Innovation and Commercialization on contracts, creating invoices, and ensuring funds are received.
  16. *Trains students on Stage/Production Management practices in conjunction with departmental productions.
  17. *Responsible for the management and upkeep of all Theatre & Dance facilities (Kennedy, Ernst Lab Theatre facilities, dance studio, etc). Works with respective campus facilities officials accordingly.
  18. *Arranges inspections, as well as plans and supervises in-house repairs, maintenance, renovations, and relocation of faculty offices and equipment as needed.
  19. *Serves as the building coordinator for departmental facilities and equipment to place and oversee work orders for renovations, repair, maintenance, and safety-related projects. Responsible for overall safety aspects of the facility, working in coordination with respective campus facilities offices such as the Environmental Health and Safety Office, etc.
  20. *Creates and coordinates production-related safety training and awareness programs for the department.
  21. *Determines renovation needs for facilities and creates basic designs and parameters for renovation projects to improve the use of existing facilities. Initiates the procurement process, including obtaining quotes and other required items.
  22. *Works flexible hours including evenings, weekends and/or holidays as needed.
  23. *Travels to various geographical locations for program events.
  24. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications 
  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in theatre, dance, or related field and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for production of live performances and/or facilities management; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  2. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the production of live performances as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
  3. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with production and facilities management.
  4. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative, and timely manner.
  5. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally, and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing and fiscal management software.
  8. If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
  9. Demonstrated ability to support the Department of Theatre & Dance's mission of equity, diversity, and inclusion in performing their duties.
  10. Experience in budget planning and knowledge of spreadsheet software.
  11. Relevant communication, interpersonal, organizational, management and production skills and experience.
  12. Knowledge of rules, regulations, and proper use of entertainment rights.
  13. Ability to work nights, weekends, and travel to program related events.
Desirable Qualifications
  1. MFA supportive of position.
  2. Affiliations with relevant professional/scholarly organizations.
  3. Certified rigger.
  4. Additional specialization or skills in a production area.
  5. Demonstrated commitment and/or training in DEI principles.
