Position Summary:
The Associate Dean for Faculty Development is a tenure-track or tenured faculty member who works on behalf of the Dean, usually with delegated responsibility, to assist in overseeing certain aspects of College administration. Serving at the pleasure of the Dean, the Associate Dean is an important part of the Colleges leadership team. The Associate Dean must be able to maintain a professional working relationship with the Dean and must be able to represent the College positively to external constituents. The Associate Dean works with the Assistant Registrar-Law to manage the Colleges curriculum, including determining what courses to offer each semester, assigning courses to faculty, and securing part-time, temporary (i.e., "adjunct") and full-time, temporary professors ("visitors") as needed.The Associate Dean will provide support for the Colleges research mission, including assisting junior faculty with their progress toward and applications for tenure and promotion. The Associate Dean in Moscow (or Boise) will represent the Dean and the College, as requested by the Dean, at College, University, or other public events; this representation may include giving public remarks. The Associate Dean will also facilitate faculty governance.The Dean, according to the needs of the College, may assign additional duties. These duties may include participation in College and University committees. The Associate Dean will teach courses according to the needs of the College and as assigned by the Dean, with course releases sufficient to account for the increased service obligations of the administrative role. The Associate Dean is expected to participate in outreach activities, continue a scholarly agenda, and meet the other requirements for tenured or tenure-track professors. This position is normally a three-year appointment with the potential for an appointment renewal. This position requires summer work, to be supported with a summer stipend. Duties include:
  • If appropriate given administrative responsibilities, teach one course per year in line with the Colleges needs.
  • Assist with the onboarding and orientation of new faculty members.
  • Work with existing faculty members in university HR processes
  • Secure, train, and assess part-time and full-time, temporary professors as needed, in collaboration with the Dean.
  • Manage learning outcomes and assessment program.
  • Manage the College of Laws Annual Program Review and other university-required processes.
  • Support the dean in annual performance evaluation of faculty
  • Liaise with the university on the College of Law Bylaws and ensure ongoing compliance with the Faculty-Staff Handbook.
  • Support junior faculty in development of tenure and promotion applications, and
  • support the Colleges overall research and scholarship mission.
  • Assist with American Bar Association and Association of American Law Schools
  • accreditation reviews, submitting curriculum and other matters to the University, and completing necessary paperwork and processes.
  • Manage College of Law curriculum and annual course offerings.
  • Assign courses to permanent faculty.
  • Facilitate faculty governance by, for example, surveying faculty preferences for standing committee assignments.
  • Assist in assessing ongoing compliance with accreditation standards and in implementing changes in those standards
  • Develop and enforce College of Law policies related to academic administration.
  • Serve ex officio on College of Law Curriculum Committee.
  • Represent the Dean and College at College, University, and public events, as needed.
  • Help develop, support, and maintain a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community.
  • Help develop, support, and maintain a culture of kindness, respect, and competence.
  • Other duties necessary to manage and promote the College, as assigned by the Dean.
  • Participate in outreach activities and meet the other requirements for tenure-track professors and College administrators.



Minimum Qualifications:
  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Tenure-track or tenured faculty member at the University of Idaho College of Law at the time of appointment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, including public speaking, skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, including ability to identify and take the initiative to address problems.
  • Ability to work professionally with the Dean, Associate and Assistant Deans, faculty, and staff.







Preferred Qualifications:
  • Full professor at the College of Law at the time of appointment.
  • An understanding of College and University policies and procedures.
  • An understanding of ABA standards and accreditation requirements.
  • Experience on the Colleges Curriculum or Appointments Committees.
  • Experience on University committees.
