Job Posting for Assistant Vice President of Development, Main Campus at University of Iowa Center for Advancement
Advances the University of Iowa through leadership and oversight of assigned Main Campus fundraising programs. Works with direct reports and campus partners to establish and achieve fundraising priorities and goals. Develops and manages a portfolio of active principal and major gift prospects, skillfully moving those prospects through the steps of an established process of donor engagement. Serves as a member of Main Campus Leadership Team and Main Campus AVP workgroup, and participates in departmental decision-making.
Position allows for telecommuting/work from home (up to 3 days per week depending upon business need and leader approval). Candidate must be within driving distance of office located in Iowa City, IA.
Donor Engagement
Manages portfolio of active principal and major gift prospects ($100,000 ), facilitating movement though the donor process in order to meet expectations for solicitations, gifts closed, and average gift size
Interfaces with principal gifts officers as appropriate and broadens the working team for principal gift prospects by engaging subordinates in principal gifts strategy in meaningful ways
Models the role of a trusted philanthropic advisor and identifies meaningful donor-centered ways for prospects to achieve their desired impact while meeting institutional funding needs
Prepares partners/leaders as necessary for donor meetings and guides their critical role in the giving conversation and donor process
Develops, implements, and participates in stewardship activities for donors as relevant (e.g., acknowledgement letters, publicity events)
Conducts all activities, particularly those involving patient data, according to established laws, policies, procedures, and standards and with the full support of UICA, UI, and UI Hospitals and Clinics as relevant
Organizational Leadership
Provides leadership and strategic oversight for multiple fundraising programs Main Campus programs as assigned
Leads fundraising program for assigned area(s), including any special campaigns for program and capital support; Works with campus partners to develop strategic fundraising priorities and comprehensive multi-year plans for assigned areas
Works with direct report leaders to establish fundraising goals in their areas and develop and implement strategies to achieve these goals
Encourages creativity and resourcefulness among teams and helps them find ways to achieve fundraising goals
Works closely with deans, directors, and other university administrators to ensure satisfaction with UICA programs and priorities
Partners with Data Analytics to develop strategies that strengthen the fundraising capacity of assigned units over time
Models and encourages cooperation and communication among development officers to maximize efficiency and performance
Enables change by contributing to desired outcomes and participating in efforts to enhance processes and practices
Serves as a member of the Main Campus Leadership Team, keeping them informed of activities and issues in assigned areas and participating in departmental decision-making
Considers implications of the UICA’s strategic plan for assigned areas and ensure leaders and teams develop unit and individual goals that are in alignment with the plan; assists with strategic plan execution as needed
Works to identify and maximize the unique talent contributions within reporting line through individualized coaching and ongoing career conversations
Guide leaders through a structured and data-driven process to establish and manage unit goals and budgets
Keeps abreast of and contributes to industry trends and advances through continuing education and interaction with external colleagues; Leads the way in setting and applying innovative best practices in the areas of fundraising and team leadership
Program Leadership
Plans and oversees the overall operational, reporting, budgetary, and financial responsibilities of assigned UICA units
Develops and maintains work systems, procedures, and productivity standards that advance the mission and goals of the UICA unit and enable optimum performance of the people and other resources within it
Allocates resources to effectively accomplish the work of the UICA units
Monitors, evaluates, and aims to improve effectiveness of unit operations
Makes business decisions that are consistent with UICA mission/vision and our organizational culture and values
People Leadership
Manages all aspects of the employee lifecycle from recruitment and onboarding through separation
Empowers employees to take responsibility for their jobs and prioritizes trust and transparent communication as the basis for a productive relationship
Supports employees in developing meaningful goals aligned with those of the UICA units and UICA and in achieving/surpassing those goals
Inspires performance through clear expectations and ongoing feedback
Supports employees struggling to meet expectations for productivity, quality, and goal attainment
Identifies and anticipates competency gaps within individuals and the UICA units as a whole
Motivates, develops, coaches, and rewards employees for growth in competencies over time, leading to new opportunities for subject matter expertise or leadership
Partners with Talent Management to achieve optimum results for employees, self, UICA units, and UICA
Creates a work environment that is consistent with UICA mission/vision and that emphasizes our organizational culture and values
Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree 10 years of relevant development/fundraising experience (including management) required. Advanced degree preferred.
