Job Description Summary:
The KUMC Archives at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) invites applications for a Project Archivist to process the records of the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) housed within the Archives' Spine and Orthopedic Historical Collections. The SRS is an international society of physicians and allied health professionals that supports research and education in the field of spinal deformities.
Under the direction of the Head Archivist, the Project Archivist will work to arrange and describe the records of the SRS and create a DACS-compliant finding aid in ArchivesSpace that will be accessible to the KUMC community and the public. This is a full-time, salaried, 1-year contract position. We welcome applications from early career archivists looking to develop their expertise.

The Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) is an international society that was founded in 1966 with 37 members. It has gained recognition as one of the world's premier spine societies and maintains a commitment to research and education in the field of spinal deformities. Strict membership criteria ensure that the individual Fellows support that commitment and current membership includes over 1,000 of the world's leading spine surgeons, researchers, physician assistants, and orthotists who are involved in research and treatment of spinal deformities.
About the KUMC Archives:
The KUMC Archives, under the auspices of the Department of History and Philosophy of Medicine, collects, organizes, preserves, and promotes appropriate use of materials of enduring historical value, and provides assistance to qualified researchers in the history of the medical center and local medical history.
The KUMC Archives' Spine and Orthopedic Historical Collections house several significant collections suitable for study by students and scholars interested in the history of orthopedic surgery in the United States. The collections include the records of the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) and the papers of Drs. Paul R. Harrington, Walter P. Blount, Leonard F. Peltier, and Rex L. Diveley among others.
Job Description: Required Qualifications:
Master's degree in Library/Information Science or equivalent from an ALA-accredited program or certification by the Academy of Certified Archivists by time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with the arrangement and description of archival collections.
Familiarity with archival standards, including Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS).
Experience with archival collection management systems, including ArchivesSpace.
Experience with detail-oriented work, including the ability to analyze and repurpose legacy inventories and access tools.
Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
Experience providing reference services, preferably in a special collections or archival setting.
Job Duties Outlined: Primary Responsibilities:
Employ archival standards and best practices to survey, arrange, describe, and preserve the records of the SRS.
Utilize Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS) and other professional standards to prepare an EAD-encoded finding aid using ArchivesSpace.
Promote the access and discovery of the SRS collection.
Additional Responsibilities:
Identify materials from the SRS collection for digitization and participate in digitization projects as appropriate.
Assist the Head Archivist in the planning, design, and curation of an exhibit of SRS artifacts, photographs, ephemera, and archival material as appropriate.
Work to improve the access and discovery of archival collections directly relevant to the SRS collection.
Assist the Head Archivist with reference and research services as necessary.
Perform other job-related duties as required or assigned.
