Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is comprised of the Clinical Service, Campus Assistance, Resource, and Education (CARE) and the Testing Service. The goal of the Counseling Center is to provide students with clinical, educational and outreach-based services that benefit the mental health and well-being of all Jayhawks. Our services are primarily short-term in nature, and we make referrals to other helping professionals and community agencies as appropriate. Members of the counseling center are committed to:
The Advocate will also work with the CARE Coordinator to help manage and create outreach material for these services (marketing on KU campus and the community, creation, and management of social media and website content). Will work with campus and community partners to coordinate programming, education, and outreach.
The ideal candidate will have experience in and commitment to promoting and enhancing inclusion and commitment to ongoing development of multicultural competence. Additionally, the candidate will have the ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively, to take initiative, and to be flexible in response to developing demands and challenges of the position.
The incumbent in this position will see, hear, and have access to confidential information that must be handled in accordance with all relevant state and federal laws and University policies and procedures regarding its use and disclosure.
This position also is authorized to review, create, and process information &/or data in accordance with established procedures in the performance of job duties.
This position is expected to be a 10 month position, active from August 1 to May 31.

Job Description
50% - Direct Student Support
10% - Other duties as assigned.
- Provides support for individuals affected by interpersonal violence including incidents of sexual assault & abuse, sexual harassment, sexual battery, intimate partner violence, dating violence, and stalking. This includes immediate crisis intervention as well as individualized supportive counseling.
- Accompanying and providing advocacy to survivors during medical and legal exams and processes as the student chooses.
- Provides information on available resources and options, referring students to additional services when relevant.
- Works with CARE Coordinator to establish and maintain partnerships with the members of the campus and community to cultivate networks and systems that assist and educate students and others affected by interpersonal violence.
- Works collaboratively to campus outreach and trauma-informed responses that address all forms of harm.
- Provides consultative information applicable to student, staff, and faculty sexual violence trainings.
10% - Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
This position may require working after-hours for programming purposes on a rare basis.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology or related degree.
- 3 years related experience. (sexual assault or domestic violence advocacy and/or prevention, crisis intervention, case management experience)
- Demonstrated ability to manage marketing material and social media content, as evidenced by application material.
- Strong written communication skills as evidenced by application material.
- Experience with training, education and adherence to privacy and confidentiality.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology, or related degree.
- Experience in higher education programming, teaching, and presenting.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills as evidenced by application material and interview.
- Demonstrated foundational knowledge on interpersonal violence response and survivor support as evidenced by application material and work experience.
