The Office of Student Engagement and Leadership is one of several departments that report to the Dean for Students. The Student Engagement and Leadership staff serve, educate, and empower students through several different initiatives, organizations, and resources including, but not limited to: Student Organizations, Leadership Programs, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Leadership Development, University Program Council, Homecoming, campus traditions, and several campus wide programs. Our department staff collaborate on a consistent basis with other areas of university life such as Orientation, First Year Experience, Family Weekend, Athletics, Residential Life, Alumni Association, and more. Through these programs, students learn the skills necessary to understand themselves, navigate group dynamics, and serve their organizations, professions, and communities. We are proud to offer an engaged student experience that provides life and career readiness skills needed for success beyond graduation.

The Assistant Director is one of four professional staff members who are responsible for providing student engagement, learning and development within the fraternity and sorority life community and the University Program Council at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Opportunities may also be available to work with leadership development programs and other student engagement initiatives. The professional in this position will benefit from a wealth of experience in more than one of the traditional student activity areas, providing unique preparation for a future career in leading a comprehensive student engagement area.

This position will work with other Assistant Directors in the overall success of the whole fraternity and sorority community including developing a strategic plan and vision for future growth. The team will be responsible for the expansion, development, and administration of a strong fraternity and sorority community by working closely with chapters, advisors, national representatives, and four governing councils. Using a successful chapter and council coaching model, the Assistant Directors will advise approximately 8 chapters and 1-2 governing councils each (24 total chapters and 4 total governing councils).

The Assistant Director will also work with the University Program Council (UPC), a student led programming board and the premier programming organization at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. This comprehensive program serves the educational, social, cultural, and recreational interests of university students. In addition to producing programs, experience in UPC provides students with opportunities to develop leadership, interpersonal, and programming skills, just to name a few. Currently, the committees within UPC include Entertainment, Traditions, Spirit, Culture, and Marketing. The Assistant Director will directly work with one to two of the five UPC committees as well as collaborate with other assistant directors in supporting the UPC Executive Board.


Specific Responsibilities:
  • Direct responsibilities of each Assistant Director will be contingent upon current need and individual strengths and skill set.
  • Advise one to two governing councils – IFC, MGC, NPHC, or Panhellenic.
  • Select, train, supervise, and provide professional development and coaching for graduate staff and interns who support the fraternity and sorority life community.
  • Work with other assistant directors to oversee all programming sponsored by Fraternity/Sorority Life, chapters, and councils ranging from Membership Recruitment, New Member Education, Greek Council Officer Transition and Training, Greek Excellence program, Greek Week, Leadership retreats, etc.
  • Coordinate plan for growth and development of fraternity and sorority community including potential addition of chapters, programming, housing, etc.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of a comprehensive marketing plan for promoting the fraternity/sorority experience at UL-Lafayette
  • Directly advise one to two committees currently in UPC (Committees include Traditions, Spirit, Entertainment, Culture, and Marketing).
  • Work with all aspects of event management for assigned UPC sponsored activities, including artists’ contracts, budget management, event logistics, promotion, and evaluation.
  • Share responsibility to recruit, select, and train student leaders of the various committees and the UPC Executive Board.
  • Provide direction for the planning and promotion of program activities that offer a variety of learning outcomes including but not limited to cognitive development, critical thinking, leadership, civic duty and engagement, service, interpersonal development, and engagement with UL and other students.
  • Identify and coordinate professional development opportunities for student leaders and travel with them to off-site opportunities.
  • Seek creative partnerships for providing excellent programming resources to students.
  • Assist with maintaining department social media outlets, websites, etc.
  • Assist with developing and maintaining a plan for marketing and promoting the student engagement experience through various mediums.
  • Serve as a representative of the Office of Student Engagement and Leadership to departments within Academic and Student Affairs in addition to University committees.
  • Night and weekend hours are required as related to specific programs and services

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree is required. A Master’s degree in student affairs or a related field is highly preferred.
  • Undergraduate membership in a nationally recognized fraternity or sorority.
  • A commitment to the educational goals of program activities.
  • Strength in working as one part of a dynamic and motivated team of professionals.
  • Strong professional and personal communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Record of demonstrated success advising college students, developing student leaders, and advising student organizations.
  • Commitment to and experience with working with intercultural populations of students.
  • Demonstrated success in event planning and management.
  • Leadership experience in student activities/organizations as an undergraduate.
