The Department of Human Resource Services (HRS) invites applications for a Computer System Analyst II. This position reports to the Business Operations Analyst and is part of the HRS/Payroll systems team. Team responsibilities include the timely, efficient implementation of Banner Ellucian update releases; analyzes and evaluates the effects and consequences (intended and otherwise) of updates and determines optimum implementation deadlines; and tests production database to ensure the efficacy of the update.

 

Position reviews current utilization of Banner and makes recommendations for possible implementation of new and/or unused features for Banner HRS processing; works closely with the HRS/Payroll systems team and compliance team to identify the cause behind database errors and recommends/implements corrections; works with the teams to implement new, and updated software requirements, such as applicant tracking and time reporting; provides the Business Operations Analyst with appropriate information regarding third party system requirements; and explains and demonstrates software solutions to users, and maintains a dialogue with them throughout the testing and implementation process to review, revise, and refine software testing and implementation.

 

Position will provide technical training and advice to user staff at all levels; develop an understanding of the business of the user offices, in order to be able to articulate the user perspective as well as the information systems perspective; works with the users to identify and solve problems in a variety of systems; acts as a consultant to user offices on campus and at affiliated campuses; creates and disseminates ad hoc reports; grants access to HRS systems to external users within strict HRS guidelines; writes and maintains user and system request documentation, such as change/implementation request specifications, flow diagrams, file layouts, data entry manuals, screen and print layouts, and training/presentation materials; and participates in developing standards for HRS systems usage, data dissemination, and documentation.

 

This position is designed for a Career Ladder and may progress to a Computer Systems Analyst III as higher-level knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience are attained.

 

After a period of training the incumbent will be able to:

  • Perform system analysis work with an in-depth understanding of the payroll and HRS data system.
  • Collaborate confidently with teams across campus who either impact the HRS system or request use of data from the HRS system.
  • Effectively assist in the development of accurate documentation and training materials for the functional users of the HRS system.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of where data is stored, who can use the data, and how to connect the data to produce accurate reports.

 

Required Skills

 

  • Ability to provide a solution-based approach to all projects and to organize and prioritize multiple projects and changing priorities with an understanding of critical deadlines.
  • Ability to provide well-researched and documented solution design.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of individuals and groups with diverse backgrounds at all levels both on and off campus, including demonstrated verbal, listening, presentation, and written communication skills with the ability to use Zoom, Teams, Outlook, and Skype.
  • Ability to communicate with specific target audiences in both technical and/or business user language.
  • Demonstrated technical writing skills and the ability to produce documentation for technical support staff.
  • Skill in project management with the ability to plan and follow through while keeping the team updated on progress.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships.
  • Advanced skill in report writing systems such as SQL or Access and be able to understand and apply integrated database structures, Banner HRIS preferred.
  • Must be able to demonstrate sound judgment; use troubleshooting, analytical and critical thinking skills; and use time management skills.
  • Must be able to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Ability to follow University of Montana policies and procedures in all areas.
  • Ability to develop thorough knowledge regarding HRS/payroll processing and employee data.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive, trust-based relationships with departmental representatives and team members.
  • Must be able to address ambiguous situations and information in a positive, open, and thoughtful way.
  • Ability to maintain a consistently professional, personable demeanor.
  • Ability to maintain complete confidentiality with all issues discussed and managed in the HRS office.
  • Ability to analyze information and determine an appropriate course of action.
  • Ability and desire to learn, grow, and develop work knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Ability to learn modern technologies and maintain technical currency.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Any combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills, and/or abilities that equate to the level of a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Information Systems or a closely related field, plus a minimum of four (4) years of experience in programming and analysis of business-related software preferred.
  • Extensive working knowledge of and experience with relational databases, such as Oracle and associated toolset, especially SQL and PL/SQL preferred.
