What are the responsibilities and job description for the Counselor (10-month position) position at University of Montevallo?
The counselor provides direct mental health counseling for individuals, couples, and groups, outreach and consultation services. As needed this position also assists in providing training to students in mental health professions. This is a full-time 10-month position.
1. Provide direct care/clinical services to the university community (students, faculty, and staff), including but not limited to, individual, couples, and group therapy, screenings/assessments, crisis intervention, triage and case management.
2. Serve as a point of contact and provide consultation to faculty, staff, parents, and students expressing concerns regarding members of the University community exhibiting signs of distress.
3. Prepare and maintain appropriate clinical and non-clinical documentation.
4. Maintain ethical, legal, and best practice standards of care consistent with applicable state and federal laws, UM Policies, CS Operating Procedures, applicable code of the ethics (ACA).
5. Participate in both the Student Affairs and Counseling Services on-call rotation.
6. Assist with prevention and outreach initiatives to address mental health and developmental issues and promote available resources.
7. Continue professional development through active memberships, presentations, and conference/training events to ensure adherence to best practices.
8. Promote and maintain positive relationships across the UM campus and community by working effectively with on and off campus partners.
9. Assist in the training and supervision of graduate interns as needed.
10. Serve on assigned Student Affairs and University committees.
11. Assist with Student Affairs and University events and activities as needed.
12. Assume other duties as the Counseling Services Director may assign.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Knowledge and skills related to counseling theory and techniques, counseling laws, ethical codes, standards of practice, and diagnostic criteria.
2. Knowledge and skills related to providing mental health services in a residential university setting preferred.
3. Understanding of human development and college student development.
4. Ability to maintain a strict level of confidentiality in performing duties.
5. Ability to manage crisis situations effectively.
6. Ability to work comfortably with diverse populations.
7. Ability to learn and effectively use departmental software platforms (Titanium, Maxient, Banner) utilized by the department. Working knowledge of Titanium Scheduler strongly preferred.
8. Working knowledge of Microsoft 365.
9. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
10. Ability to be detail-oriented and work with a high degree of accuracy.
11. Effective time management and organizational skills.
12. Ability to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances.
13. Must be self-directed and able to complete projects with limited supervision.
14. Ability to work as a contributing member of the CS team.
Education and Experience
Master’s degree in Counseling; Clinical Psychology or Social Work required.
Experience as a mental health counselor in a University setting is preferred (can include an internship).
Licenses and Certifications
Eligible or credentialed/licensed for clinical practice in Alabama. Licensed for clinical practice in the Alabama
