Position Summary

Position Summary:

The University of New Mexico Art Museum (UNMAM) is dedicated to advanced learning and creating connections, both in and outside of the University community. As a teaching museum, UNMAM is committed to offering students professional development and mentorship opportunities as well as access to the largest collection of artwork in New Mexico.

Under the supervision of the Coordinator of Exhibitions, this position will assist in the preparation and installation of museum exhibitions. As a member of the UNMAM Museum Assistant Program, this position will also support the museum’s visitor services team in daily operations as needed.

Any current student is welcome to apply, however preference is given to those with a current work-study award and/or previous experience in a similar role at a museum or gallery.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties include, but are not limited to: assisting the Coordinator of Exhibitions with installation and deinstallation of art; assists with packing and moving artwork; assists with painting galleries; assists with lighting of artwork and galleries; assisting with museum front desk and daily operations as needed; performing miscellaneous job-related duties and providing support to UNMAM staff as needed.

Attendance at training sessions with the Coordinator of Exhibitions and Collections Manager is required. Moderate physical activity and occasional heavy lifting is required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in a degree seeking program at UNM
  • Enrolled at least half-time (6 hours) at UNM for fall and spring semesters (Audit hours do not count), and if Work Study, you must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Moderate physical activity and occasional heavy lifting required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in art handling and/or exhibit preparation.
  • Knowledge of art storage and display methods, techniques, and procedures.
