Position Overview
The University of North Texas at Dallas invites applications for a full-time Assistant Laboratory Manager position in the Department of Natural Sciences, beginning in Fall 2023. This is a 12-month staff level position with 75% of the responsibilities dedicated to laboratory and safety duties and 25% of the responsibility dedicated to teaching. The Assistant Laboratory Manager reports directly to the Laboratory Manager. RESPONSIBILITIES: The science laboratories in the Department of Natural Sciences at the University of North Texas at Dallas support the instruction of Biology, Chemistry and Physics courses. These courses include Biology for Educators, Environmental Science, Earth Science, Biology for Science Majors I and II, Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Microbiology, Context of Chemistry, General Chemistry I and II, Organic Chemistry I and II, Conceptual Physics, General Physics I and II, and Undergraduate Research.
The Assistant Laboratory Manager is responsible for helping with instructional laboratory preparation and clean-up, maintaining a safe laboratory environment, stockroom upkeep, and maintaining inventories and laboratory equipment and instrumentation, as needed. The Assistant Laboratory Manager is also expected to teach the equivalent of 1 course every semester. The university expects rapid growth upon completion of a state-of-the-art, 115,000 sq. ft. STEM Building by Fall 2025 which will house 12 additional teaching and research laboratories, a stockroom, and an instrumentation room.
Representative Tasks
- Inspects laboratories, equipment, and practices to ensure compliance with safety standards and government regulations.
- Inspects laboratories and equipment to identify potential hazards and reports safety and security issues and concerns weekly, monthly, and quarterly.
- Observes safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.
- Responds to biological-related emergency situations, like cleanup of limited biohazard spills.
- Recommends, develops, and delivers laboratory safety training for laboratory instructors and students.
- Performs demonstrations for laboratory instructors and students on proper operation of equipment, instrumentation, and related software.
- Helps with the preparation of laboratory exercises for instruction, as well as breaking down and cleaning-up after the exercises.
- Prepares solutions and maintains stocks of these solutions.
- Prepares hazardous waste for disposal.
- Operates glassware washers and sterilizers.
- Maintains updated biological, chemical, and safety equipment inventories.
- Teach 1 course each semester.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree in Biology, Chemistry, or another related discipline.
- Three years of experience in laboratory work or laboratory safety related work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate clearly and concisely.
- Teaching experience at the university level.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and inspection procedures for biological laboratory safety.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software.

Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or higher in Microbiology.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with the ability to follow instructions and, at times, work independently when needed.
- Experience teaching in an online or hybrid format.
- Experience with Canvas.
- Teaching experience in Biology I and II, Environmental Science, and/or Earth Science.
- Willingness to teach laboratory courses and/or large lecture sections.
