The University of St. Thomas (www.stthom.edu), a private Catholic university, located in Houston, Texas, the nation's fourth largest city, committed to the liberal arts and to the religious and intellectual tradition of Catholic higher education, is seeking a full- time Assistant Professor of Dance and the Dance Program Director. The position reports to the Chair of Fine Arts Drama & Dance within the Division of Liberal Studies in the School of Arts and Sciences.
Preferential consideration will be given to applicants who are members in good standing of the Roman Catholic Church.
The Fine Arts Drama & Dance Department is seeking a dance generalist. Specialty is open, though the candidate will be expected to teach a full range of undergraduate coursework, including dance studio practices, choreographic coursework, and other historical and theoretical courses.
In addition to teaching responsibilities, the candidate will be designated the dance department director and academic advisor for dance majors and minors. Important to this administrative appointment will be:
• Administrative leadership of the dance program.
• Advisement of dance majors and minors.
• Implementation of the dance curriculum by scheduling appropriate semester offerings.
• Hiring additional dance adjunct professors, as needed.
• Conducting program outcomes assessments.
• Recruitment of new students /dance majors.
• Implementing and teaching the full range of the dance BA/BFA curriculum.
• Production, direction and choreography for dance student concerts.
• Mentoring BFA dance seniors with the production of their capstone projects.
• Advocating for safe studio and performance space for the dancers on campus.
• Advocating for the presence of the dance program on campus and in the community.
The duties and responsibilities of the dance professor at UST require the highest standards of instructional excellence and commitment to the university.
Qualifications include: a completed MFA degree or commensurate professional performance and teaching experience; experience teaching undergraduate students; competency in supplemental online teaching methods; demonstrated skill in clear and efficient communication; must maintain appropriate confidentiality and work independently.
