General Description of Duties

This is a staff level position reporting to the Director of Career Services. The incumbent functions as a Career Counselor in the Career Services unit. This position provides counseling services to current students, alumni, and prospective students on a variety of career development topics. This position is responsible for executing the full cycle of evidence-based career development activities such as: self-assessment, career exploration, and career management and implementation activities. The goal and objective of WDLL career counselors is to empower students’ short- and long-term career preparation and management activities so they can meet their career and educational goals.                             

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
 

  • Counsel students individually and in groups on a variety of career development topics such as engaging in a wide variety of career and professional development activities and opportunities.
  • Administering evidence-based career assessment and interpretations to students.
  • Develop and conduct career workshops and presentations for students on a variety of career development topics such as career exploration, job readiness, resumes, cover letters, thank you letters, mock role-play interviews, interview clothing, jobs, internships, other positions, professional development opportunities, and continued education opportunities, etc.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with Employer Outreach Coordinator staff members, General Education staff members, and assessment team members to communicate and recommend job, internship, and other positions as well as matriculation to UDC for credit degree programs, professional development opportunities, and career programs to students.
  • Outreach to WDLL faculty and staff while serving as the liaison for applicable WDLL partnerships to promote and develop strong and healthy relationships for WDLL students.
  • Assist the Employer Outreach Coordinators, Pathway Staff, and other division Staff members to plan, implement, and evaluate career events and career programs with faculty/staff, employers/recruiters, and community partners such as career workshops, information sessions, interview sessions, networking sessions, career conferences, employment events, job fairs, internship fairs, career fairs, etc.
  • Assist with collecting WDLL specific data and completing data entry such as appointments, client check-ins, user accounts, career development milestones, accomplishments, career development curricula, career events, employment positions, career opportunities, career informational resources, employment outcomes, office documents, etc.
  • Represent the division at university, employer, and community partner events which may require travel between campuses and off-site locations.
  • Prepare and submit reports for career counseling outcomes while maintaining records of activities and data.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements 
 

  • Possess a bachelor’s degree or higher in counseling, human services, psychology, social work, or behavioral health. Specific education background in career counseling methodologies is preferred.
  • Possess at least three (3) years of related work experience in the field of counseling, human services, or career services (preferred).
  • Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in career exploration assessments and career readiness assessments that assess client interests, leisure activities, personality, skills, strengths, values, and etc.
  • Proficiency utilizing online software/platforms to create, manage, track, and report on student career-specific information.
  • Proficiency with computer software applications including Microsoft Office Suite Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, etc.
  • Proficiency with office technology products such as: computers, copiers, printers, scanners, faxes, telephones, projectors, etc.
  • Able to travel between multiple campuses and off-site locations.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by AFSCME local 2087 and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, UDC does not provide sponsorship for student visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).


Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Veterans Preference:  Applicants claiming veterans preference must submit official proof at the time of application.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
