Job Summary:

The Webb laboratory in the Division of Genetics and Metabolism in the Department of Pediatrics is seeking a Scientist to come join us. Our lab focuses on studying the genetics of rare diseases. Rare diseases collectively affect ~350 million people globally, and ~80% of rare diseases are genetic in origin, about half affect children, many are fatal, and very few have cures. We focus on further study of rare genetic diseases where Dr. Webb identified the molecular etiology. Ongoing projects in the lab include studying mitochondrial disorders, a newly described pediatric ataxia disorder, and congenital facial weakness.

Responsibilities:
Identifies research problems, designs research methodologies, performs research, and helps to prepare the results for presentation to professional organizations or for scholarly publications to help advance research.
  • 20% Assists with the identification of research problems and the development of research methodologies and procedures
  • 50% Collects and analyzes research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures under general supervision and limited responsibility
  • 5% Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities
  • 5% Attends and assists with the facilitation of scholarly events and presentations in support of continued professional development and the dissemination of research information
  • 5% Writes or assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding
  • 15% Serves as a main point of contact and liaison with internal and external stakeholders providing information and representing the interests of a specialized research area

Qualifications:
  • Mouse husbandry OR hiPSC experience required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of research experience in molecular biology, genetics, or stem cell work.
  • Significant experience in the following fields and knowledge of related methods is essential: cell culture, mouse models of disease, Western blotting, tissue processing, and immunohistochemistry.

The ideal candidate will have the following experience:

Mouse work:
  • Experience setting up timed matings
  • Experience with mice euthanasia
  • Experience dissecting E9.5 to E14.5 embryos
  • Experience embedding embryo samples & preparation for cryosectioning would be an exceptional candidate
  • Experience genotyping and maintaining mouse colony records

hiPSC work:
  • Cell culture experience with iPSC and hiPSC lines
  • Experience maintaining, expanding, and freezing lines
  • Experience differentiating iPSC lines into neurons (or other cell types)
  • Experience developing organoids would be an exceptional candidate
  • Experience with cell picking would be an exceptional candidate

Other Experience (Please describe if you have experience with the following):
  • Experience performing Western blotting
  • Experience performing cryosectioning
  • Experience with immunohistochemistry
  • Experience with fluorescent and confocal microscopy
  • Experience with FACS cell sorting

General Requirements:
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience working with undergraduate students and summer students preferred
  • Ability to problem solve, discuss and interpret results, and comfortable with some independence
