What are the responsibilities and job description for the SCIENTIST I - GENETICS position at University of Wisconsin–Madison?
The Webb laboratory in the Division of Genetics and Metabolism in the Department of Pediatrics is seeking a Scientist to come join us. Our lab focuses on studying the genetics of rare diseases. Rare diseases collectively affect ~350 million people globally, and ~80% of rare diseases are genetic in origin, about half affect children, many are fatal, and very few have cures. We focus on further study of rare genetic diseases where Dr. Webb identified the molecular etiology. Ongoing projects in the lab include studying mitochondrial disorders, a newly described pediatric ataxia disorder, and congenital facial weakness.

- 20% Assists with the identification of research problems and the development of research methodologies and procedures

- Mouse husbandry OR hiPSC experience required.
- Minimum of 2 years of research experience in molecular biology, genetics, or stem cell work.
- Significant experience in the following fields and knowledge of related methods is essential: cell culture, mouse models of disease, Western blotting, tissue processing, and immunohistochemistry.
The ideal candidate will have the following experience:
Mouse work:
- Experience setting up timed matings
- Experience with mice euthanasia
- Experience dissecting E9.5 to E14.5 embryos
- Experience embedding embryo samples & preparation for cryosectioning would be an exceptional candidate
- Experience genotyping and maintaining mouse colony records
hiPSC work:
- Cell culture experience with iPSC and hiPSC lines
- Experience maintaining, expanding, and freezing lines
- Experience differentiating iPSC lines into neurons (or other cell types)
- Experience developing organoids would be an exceptional candidate
- Experience with cell picking would be an exceptional candidate
Other Experience (Please describe if you have experience with the following):
- Experience performing Western blotting
- Experience performing cryosectioning
- Experience with immunohistochemistry
- Experience with fluorescent and confocal microscopy
- Experience with FACS cell sorting
General Requirements:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience working with undergraduate students and summer students preferred
- Ability to problem solve, discuss and interpret results, and comfortable with some independence
