Nurse Navigator – (Georgetown)
Responsible for the coordination of patient care across the continuum of Radiation Oncologic care for all patients. Educates/provides information, supports patients, and facilitates treatment plans. Functions as a patient advocate, guides patients and families throughout cancer care and survivorship experience. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.

Education:
Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) from an accredited academic nursing program required.
Master’s degree preferred.
Experience:
3-4 years clinical nursing required.
Experience with surgical oncology, inpatient/outpatient/community oncology services. Preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Must have clinical maturity and experience, excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team of health care providers.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Position requires a high level of advocacy and problem-solving ability.
- Ability to multitask and organize advocacy and support for a large and varied group of cancer patients and their families.
- Knowledge of community resources is helpful.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs the intake, assessment/triage, coordination and navigation of all patients referred to for Radiation Therapy.
- Serves as a liaison for referring physicians seeking information, or access to the system.
- Screens patients for appropriate information and manages the acquisition of pertinent medical records for initial appointments.
- Responsible for the planning and implementation of the patient evaluation process.
- Facilitates the evaluation of patients by interfacing with referring physicians and MGUH services, including: Radiology, Medical Oncology, Radiation Medicine and other MGUH services, as needed.
- Coordinates the complex management of patients at various stages of their diagnosis, treatment and follow-up, collaborating with all disciplines involved in the patient's care, to assure timely progress toward the best clinical outcome in the most effective manner.
- Identifies opportunities for patient participation in clinical trials. Communicates information to physicians, research coordinators and referring physicians to promote clinical trial enrollment. Responsible for clinical trial Informed Consent and specimen collection as needed.
- Navigates the patient/caregiver through the continuum of care, providing education and resources about medical condition, diagnostic procedures, treatments, clinical trials, support services, hospital processes, and other relevant information.
- Serves as an ongoing resource for patient/caregiver education and support.
- Communicates patient's progress/disposition to health care providers.
- Aids in maintaining outcome database.
- Aids in the management of IRB communications and regulatory updates.
- Has a working knowledge and access to multiple electronic systems to facilitate patient care and documentation.
- Attends Oncology tumor Board.
- Works closely with physicians and marketing department to develop marketing ideas and materials to promote Radiation Therapy Program.
- Identifies needs and develops patient education and support material.
- Provides community education and outreach.
- Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area.
