Duties

  • Responds to medical emergencies on the facility grounds, and my encounter situations which may be life threatening a s part of the Rapid Response Team, Code Blue, or medical transport team. Appropriately implements emergency care in accordance with established protocols and policies. Works in concert with other members of these teams to determine the nature, extent, and seriousness of the patient's condition, including the search for medical alert symbols and medications.
  • Assists licensed professionals with the delivery of care to patients with complex, specialized, and potentially life-threatening situations, including setting up equipment and passing instruments in the event of: cardioversions, insertion of thoracostomy tubes, or initiation of mechanical ventilation to restore normal physiological function or prevent deterioration of patient's condition.
  • Assists licensed professionals with patients who have mental health crises including but not limited to intervention, aggressive behavior control with PMDB techniques, suicidal patients, 1:1 needs, etc.
  • Possesses the knowledge to recognize life threatening situations and acts to correct these emergent situations according to established national or local protocols. Initiates cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BLS) and use of automatic external defibrillator (AED).
  • Assists with airway management using bag-valve-mask (BVM), oral airway or nasal airway. May use pulse oximetry, capnometry, capnography, and/or other secondary confirmation methods to ensure correct placement of an emergency advanced airway. Operates specialized medical equipment such as defibrillators, electrocardiographs, and oxygen apparatus in accordance with applicable training and standards. Observes patient status and keeps licensed personnel informed of any change in condition.
  • Performs patient screening including but not limited to triage , health history, chief complaint, history of present illness, medications, allergies, family and social history, review of systems, etc.
  • Provides support, relief, and coverage as needed to central station telemetry and admits, discharges, and assigns telemetry equipment to patients in central monitoring automated system. Documents in the telemetry record and reports all observed electrocardiographic (ECG) changes in the patient's condition to the licensed staff. Performs measurements of PR, QRS, QT, RR, and QTC intervals, interprets rhythm, and prints rhythm strip every 8 hours or as required for events and recognizes lethal rhythms/arrhythmias (i.e. ventricular fibrillation and asystole) and immediately notifies appropriate staff.
  • Performs medication administration, which must comply with national and local directives and policies. Administration methods may include intramuscular, oral, topical, eye drops, ear drops, intranasal, rectal suppositories, local anesthetics, nebulized medications, subcutaneous, and intra-dermal. Follows national, local pharmacy, and facility guidelines for disposal of medications.
  • Conducts or assists with the training of personnel in CPR and advanced emergency medical care techniques. Conducts or assists with stand-downs, community health programs, healthcare screenings, and immunizations.
  • Maintains certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and other certifications as pertinent to the local facility.
  • Participates in the triage process by assisting with patient transport, obtaining vital signs, performing screens, gathering pertinent health history, medication history, and information about the chief complaint and communicates findings to appropriate clinical staff.
  • Assists triage RN as a clinical greeter tasked with rotating through and observing patients who are waiting for triage, waiting to be seen, or have been triaged by the RN and are awaiting a treatment room assignment. Keeps triage RN informed of change in condition.
Work Schedule: Weekdays, Weekends, and Holidays(various tours of duty to support 24/7 operations)

Physical Requirements: The work requires a level of physical fitness that allows for standing for extended periods, heavy lifting to position patients, and manual dexterity to perform clinical procedures. The work will require recurrent bending, lifting, stooping, standing, squatting, stretching, sitting and walking.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

GS-07 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Performing observation-based patient screenings; Collecting patient health information; Performs mental health services by assisting licensed personnel with crisis intervention and management of aggressive/suicidal psychiatric patients; Performs clinical tasks by capturing vital signs, performing wound care, and collecting/prepping specimen collections; Uses medical equipment and surgical instrumentation to perform chest tube insertions, filling water chambers, and handling instruments in a sterile field.

Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-07 level. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed one (1) full year of graduate education in a directly related field to the position of the Intermediate Care Technician, GS-7. One (1) full year of graduate education is defined 18 semester hours in courses that are directly related to the work of this position. Such graduate education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation.

Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-07 level.

To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-XX. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.
