Overview

The Utah Communications Authority is an independent state agency that operates the best public safety radio system in North America. This system is currently comprised of 800MHz trunked, conventional and VHF conventional base stations and repeaters and provides communications resources to federal, state, and local government agencies within Utah. It is comprised of over 200 sites and currently supports over 30,000 users with an equal number of VHF users.

UCA is currently seeking a radio programmer to assist in programming 800MHz trunked radios and VHF radios in a statewide communications system environment.

This position will travel around Utah to perform the duties. Sometimes this may require a night or two overnight stay in varying parts of Utah. Often, the employee will be able to go out, work, and return home in the evening. A vehicle for this travel will be provided with conditions explained upon hire.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Main responsibility will be the programming of end user radio equipment with master templates developed by UCA’s Radio Programming Authors;
  • Maintain current and accurate documentation of system configurations;
  • Maintain current database of system information i.e. radio ID assignment, user alias information, etc.;
  • Assist with programming and configuring system radios and related equipment;
  • Travel across the State of Utah to program end user radio equipment which may consist of a single user or hundreds of users at a time; and
  • Stay current with FCC rules and regulations, new technologies, and trends in the communications industry.

Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will have 2 plus years experience programming end user and system equipment in an LMR trunked radio system or equivalent;
  • The ideal candidate will have a knowledge and understanding of two-way radio theory and communications systems;
  • Experience with major radio manufacturers including L3Harris, Motorola, and Kenwood;
  • Experience in a P25 environment is highly desirable
  • Experience in diagnostics, repair, maintenance, and programming of complex two-way radio systems;
  • FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License, FCIA, NABER, or equivalent industry certification a plus;
  • Must have a thorough understanding of many types on end user radio equipment, models, and the software used to program and support such equipment/models/software;
  • Must be familiar with the technical capabilities and limitations associated with 911 call centers and dispatch centers with relation to patching resources together;
  • Must have a thorough and comprehensive understanding of the specific needs of first responders and other vital government entities when it comes to communicating with each other in a local, regional, or statewide setting;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Excellent organizational skills; and
  • Excellent customer service skills.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $25.00 - $27.00 per hour
