Overview

This position will support an ongoing research project.  Position activities including receipt of biospecimen, sample acquisition, data entry/documentation, sample shipment, inventory management, interacting with study participants, and other related duties as assigned for clinical and epidemiological research on the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Project. This individual should have excellent communication and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Confers with Study Coordinator regarding the procedures and techniques to be followed in conducting research.
  • Assists in the preparation and processing of biologic samples.
  • Collects, inputs, and maintains data in databases.
  • Performs organization, shipping, and re-stocking of supplies.
  • Receives new shipments of samples, coordinates the storage, and updates inventory.
  • Conducts barcoding and data uploads of incoming samples.
  • Pulling and proper handling of samples, aliquoting, and shipping of samples.
  • Contacts study participants by phone/email/text to schedule visits, send reminders, clarify data issues
  • Organizes and prepares area for study related equipment and supplies.
  • Assists in sample kit preparation and drop-off, pickup/transport from participants’ homes
  • Assist in sample collection when needed
  • Assist in collection of anthropometric data
  • Administering cognitive assessments, as needed
  • Provides support to other members of the team and other duties as assigned.
  • Attends meetings with laboratory, clinical coordinators, and management to ensure all projects stay on track and address any issues that may arise.
  • Ability to work both from home (internet connectivity and privacy), and from office or lab.
  • Problem Solving

    This position assists Study Coordinator in planning methods and techniques. Work requires exercising independent judgment and basic theoretical knowledge of the applicable science. Work is performed in accordance with the supervision of Study Coordinator and through periodic conferences with superior.

     

    Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required

    Often: Office environment, some evenings and Saturdays may be required.

    Often: Laboratory environment, some evenings and Saturdays may be required.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • A minimum of two year’s study in biology, nursing, or other scientific discipline or equivalency required.\
    • Completion of identified training on blood borne pathogens and biohazardous shipping, and other research project protocols required within 3 months of employment.
    • This position is subject-sensitive and must fulfill all Utah State University health associated requirements.
    • Applicants are required to be trained on human subject protections.
    • Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
    • Applicants must have access to reliable transportation. Mileage will be reimbursed for position related activities. Occasional travel to Salt Lake City, UT, will be required.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in biology, nursing, or other scientific discipline or equivalency
    • Data collection and/or lab experience preferred.
    • Experience using word processing, spreadsheet management, database applications, and computerized tracking systems.
    • Familiarity with Open Specimen or other Lab Management Software preferred but not required
    • Phlebotomy sills preferred but not required
    • Experience working with children preferred

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Strong attention to detail, highly proactive, well-organized, experience multitasking, and meeting deadlines.
    • Strong interpersonal skills for interacting with research subjects.
    • Data analysis skills preferred but not required

    Advertised Salary

    $18 to $23 per hour

    Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes. The employee is regularly required to sit and often uses repetitive hand motions.

    The Institute for Disability Research, Policy, & Practice is one of the largest research and outreach centers at USU, and we are largely funded through grants, contracts, and fee-for-service programs. All staff positions at the IDRPP are contingent upon funding, and all senior staff at the IDRPP with graduate degrees are responsible for helping to generate funding to support our operations and growth.
