Title: Head, Intellectual Property
Location: Cambridge, MA
Reports to: Chief Executive Officer
The individual in this role will be responsible for managing all of the Company’s intellectual property matters. The role includes counseling senior Company business leaders, managing IP disputes, patent portfolio strategy and management, competitive IP intelligence, coordination with outside counsel, and due diligence in support of business transactions. The successful candidate will have significant depth of experience in diverse aspects of patent law practice, high technical competency in the life sciences, and will be adept at serving as a trusted business advisor. The role will directly report to the CEO
Here’s What You’ll Do:
Act as an advisor on a variety of IP related issues including publication reviews, IP agreement negotiation and support, and other IP issues that arise in usual course of business
Together with outside counsel prepare and prosecute patent applications worldwide, conduct patentability and freedom to operate assessments, and manage IP disputes.
Develop and implement strategies to protect the Company’s intellectual property assets (including research findings, development candidates and other related subject matter)
Conduct IP due diligence and IP agreement review/negotiation for M&A and partnering activities
Directly and/or indirectly manage legal resources, including outside counsel, to complete projects in a timely and high-quality manner
Develop and continually expand a thorough understanding of the Company’s current and planned business activities, products, competitors, and markets and keep abreast of developing legal trends, laws and regulations
Work with scientific teams to identify patentable subject matter and implement strategies to protect such subject matter
Conduct prior art searches and analyze third-party patent positions;
Provide legal advice and counsel to cross-functional R&D and business teams on a variety of IP related matters
5 or more years of patent law experience in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology field, or an equivalent combination of patent and pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry experience
Bachelor's degree or equivalent in the biological and/or chemical sciences. An advanced science degree is preferred
A J.D. degree or equivalent and admission to at least one state bar
Registered Patent Attorney
Strong communication and presentation skills, ability to communicate complex issues clearly and succinctly
Sound judgment and decision-making abilities
Strong organizational skills, including careful attention to detail and ability to handle and prioritize multiple assignments and maintain strict deadlines through effective time management
Excellent analytical, written and verbal communication skills
Highest integrity, excellent judgment and the ability to proactively recognize and effectively communicate legal issues to patent, legal and general management
