This position will prioritize three primary areas of responsibility, primarily focused on supporting our secondary and unified arts licensure programs:
The first area of responsibility will be teaching and advising in the Education department. Some core courses span all endorsement areas, and enroll students seeking recommendation for licensure in multiple content areas (e.g., introduction to learning theory courses, inclusive pedagogy courses, and capstone courses). These courses address the scientific, historical, social, and cultural foundations of pedagogy, curriculum, instruction, learning, and education. Other courses are designed specifically for students preparing to be content-specific educators at the secondary level (e.g., secondary methods courses). These courses address best practices for inclusive curriculum and instruction at the secondary level. The candidate will also advise students seeking recommendations for licensure in secondary and unified arts endorsement areas. At NVU, this includes Math, Science, English, and Social Studies
(7-12), Art, Music, and Dance (PK-12), and Middle Grades (5-9) at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
The second area of responsibility is to support the newly developed Inclusive Adolescent Education program. This is an innovative program that supports secondary licensure students in earning recommendation for licensure in Special Education (7-12) in addition to their content area endorsement. This new program was developed to align with our education department's vision for inclusive education across the PK-12 curriculum.
Other responsibilities include scholarship and community and collegial service as needed. This includes communicating regularly with the placement coordinator, licensure officer, and department chair about the progress of secondary education students; participating in department meetings and department projects; professional development events related to the Vermont Licensure Portfolio and field supervision; field supervision; and teaching additional courses as desired. The teaching load will be a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester.
Northern Vermont University's education department invites applications for a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor of Education beginning in the Fall 2023 semester. Although this position is based on the University's Johnson campus, the duties and responsibilities this position entails are part of one cross-campus education department which manages programs, some cross-campus and some campus-specific.
Applicants should submit their cover letter, their resume, their statement of commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, a teaching philosophy, and the names of 3 professional references by 12/1/22.
The successful candidate for this position will possess a Doctorate degree (or be on a pathway towards completion) in Education with demonstrated academic commitment to creating inclusive, accessible, and equitable education for all learners, and at least 3 years of relevant teaching experience. Certification in a relevant endorsement area is preferred (middle level, math, science, social studies, English, dance, music, or art).
