What you’ll be doing...

The Sustainability Project Manager, Employee Engagement and Special Projects is a multi-faceted, strategic decision making position that involves operational oversight, risk management analysis, external liaising responsibilities, and employee program leadership. You will be responsible for setting the strategic vision and implementation plans to expand our international employee sustainability engagement program in 50+ countries.

Verizon has a public goal to engage at least 50% of our employees on our Green Team by 2026. You will focus on achieving that goal domestically and internationally through events that engage tens of thousands of employees annually at all levels. This entails developing relationships, setting engagement strategy by country, reporting on goals around adoption of sustainability initiatives, and tracking the implementation of those initiatives. You will also work domestically and cross functionally across Verizon, leading green initiatives and special projects.

  • Project manage cross-functional teams incorporating sustainability into all business units.
  • Advocate sustainability throughout the company by recruiting Green Team Members and writing stories for our VZWeb newsfeed.
  • Analyze potential climate change impacts to our business and recommend appropriate initiatives helping to set the strategy for Verizon.
  • Lead participation of Green Team events including Earth Day Green Expos, Earth Day remote expos, Earth Hour Awareness Events, Recycling Rallies, Green Team recruitment, and annual sustainability awards.
  • Support development of external communications about sustainability programs.
  • Communicate with all levels of management within Verizon and third parties to determine direction for maximizing the effectiveness of these programs.
  • Make recommendations for program enhancements based on benchmarking and industry data.
  • Support executive communications and internal/external messaging around their respective programs in mediums such as the Annual Report, ESG Report, and Verizon’s intranet.
  • Own multiple third party relationships including industry partnerships and supplier relationships for key sustainability programs.
  • Manage vendor KPIs, documenting results, hosting and leading third party review meetings and annual results discussions.
  • Support benchmarking and results submissions in the area of climate and environment for industry recognitions and tracking results.
  • Provide information to our Risk & Reputation program which is responsible for responding to external requests for information about Verizon’s Sustainability overall.
  • Participate in Verizon’s community Recycling Rally program by traveling throughout the U.S. and annually in Verizon’s Earth Day initiatives.

What we’re looking for...

You have a detailed understanding of green energy, carbon neutral, and other key sustainability concepts. You have a passion for the environment and leading others.

You’ll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree of four or more years of work experience.
  • Six or more years of relevant work experience.
  • Three or more years of experience in sustainability, climate change, environmental management, community outreach, or service efforts.
  • Sustainability industry benchmarking experience.
  • Experience in third party relationship management.
  • Experience in project management and large employee engagement initiatives.
  • Willingness to travel.

Even better if you have one or more of the following:

  • BS degree in environmental science, sustainability, or engineering.
  • MBA or MS.
  • Excellent Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel skills.
  • Financial, analytical, and benchmarking skills.
  • Self-starter mindset with a passion for the environment.
  • Experience leading cross functional teams.
  • Experience in telecommunication and wireless industry.
  • Excellent executive communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to network, build influential relationships, and engage support for initiatives across organizations.
  • Exceptional problem solving skills, issue identification, problem structuring, development of actionable recommendations.
