Job Description Reporting to the Sr. Director, Financial Planning & Analysis – ( FP&A ) Commercial & Operating Finance, the Director, Commercial FP&A is a leader in Vertex's finance business partnering organization, providing financial direction and strategic insight to key business leaders reporting into the Chief Operating Officer (Total Commercial, Corporate Communications, Human Resources and Project Portfolio Management). This role will lead a team of 3 to help define and deliver against short term and long-term goals, including identification of key value drivers and Business KPIs and provide strategic decision support, influencing decisions and identifying opportunities to invest, save costs and mitigate risks on a global basis. This position is based in our Boston, MA location ( Seaport area) and requires a hybrid work schedule with 3 days in office /2 days remote on a weekly basis. Key Duties and Responsibilities: Leads the financial planning process for total Operating Expenses for the organizations that report into our Chief Operating Officer (Commercial, HR, Corporate Communications, Project Portfolio Management), including Budget, Quarterly Forecast and Annual Long Range Plan. Leads a team of Finance Business Partners ensuring coherent financial analysis and alignment across functions – responsibilities also include staff training and development, defining and evolving roles and responsibilities to meet business needs. Collaborates with business leaders to analyze trends and develop accurate forecasts, with full transparency on any judgments about risks and opportunities for total Operating Expenses (including headcount planning, internal and external expenses) Provides meaningful forward-looking direction, develops key forecast scenarios, identifies key risks/uncertainties and plans for potential mitigation. Leads the financial performance management process (tracking of key metrics, budget vs. actuals, etc.) for functions including the Monthly Operating Reviews with a focus on understanding the key drivers of short-term performance and communicating the range of possible outcomes. Provides strategic decision support, influencing decisions and identifying opportunities to invest, save costs and mitigate risks on a global basis. Builds analytics and transparent reporting to drive forecast accuracy and inform on key drivers of any variances to plan Leads the monthly / quarterly accounting close for Commercial expenses and accruals; including compliance with SOX control requirements Partners within FP&A and with accounting, DTE (IT), HR and other functions to ensure there is clear ownership and management of the deliverables from those teams and that Finance services are delivered seamlessly to the business. Ensures the financial integrity and robust corporate governance and compliance of all financial aspects for areas of responsibility. Communicates effectively throughout the processes mentioned above and day-to-day to ensure transparency and alignment across the Commercial and Finance organizations. Knowledge and Skills: Experience in pharmaceutical industry, business partnering with an executive team Expertise with Excel and PowerPoint; Knowledge of Hyperion. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and an eagerness to collaborate with colleagues (within or outside of finance) in sharing insights and learnings and partnering to ensure timely execution of project plans. Ability to lead and drive change in a developing business environment, coordinating processes involving large numbers of people, complex systems, and tight deadlines across multiple time zones. Demonstrated experience building/developing/leading a high performing group of business partners. Capability to pro-actively participate in managing within a cross-cultural matrix organization. Strong analytical and financial skills to evaluate a broad range of financial questions—especially portfolio analysis, ROI, and complex business questions. Capacity to address a broad range of challenges and business issues globally across all functions with the ability to make and facilitate quick decisions. Strong business acumen and judgment, and knowledge of the company's markets/products and industry trends. Possesses a continuous improvement mindset, with flexibility and ability to adapt to change. Basic Qualifications: Bachelors degree in Finance, Accounting or an equivalent qualification. MBA or CPA a plus, but not required. 10 years of relevant experience in finance /accounting roles demonstrating strong technical and analytical skills or the equivalent combination of education and experience Leading a team and management experience highly desired.
