Job Description
General Summary:
We are looking for a passionate scientist, skilled educator and community partner to inspire the next generation of scientists by leading the Thomas M. Menino Learning Lab in Boston. In this role, you will serve as the day-to-day teacher for student visits and all Learning Lab programs. You will also work with the wider Vertex and Boston educational communities to shape the curriculum and programs offered in the Boston Learning Lab.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teach student visits and manage the quality of student instruction/programming
- Manage the daily operations of the Boston Learning Lab
- Mentor the Vertex Researcher in Residence and Learning Lab volunteers
- Partner closely with Vertex scientists to create educational experiences for visiting students
- Manage partner school relationship at district, school leader and teacher level
- Develop new curriculum and activities with global and local Learning Lab team
- Create and implement teacher professional development experiences
- Internally and externally represent the Learning Lab and Vertex's STEAM initiatives
- Oversee the collection of data that assess the impact of Vertex STEAM outreach programs
- Organize Vertex participation in community outreach events
- Drive the development and execution of the Learning Lab summer internship program in collaboration with the STEAM Education team
- Leads the development of new Learning Lab curriculum modules
Knowledge and Skills:
- Experience teaching in a classroom setting and developing STEAM curriculum
- Ability to translate complex scientific information to a school-aged audience with varying degrees of scientific knowledge
- Skilled and highly experienced communicator and presenter
- Experience working within a matrixed team and project managing the context and logistics of long range programs
- Excellent and experienced relationship builder with the ability to relate to a wide range of stakeholders both internal and external
- Ability to deliver results with limited oversight with strong initiative and work ethic
- Committed to increase opportunities in STEAM for historically underrepresented groups
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in a STEM field is required
- Typically requires a Master of Science or PhD, with 3-5 years of teaching experience OR 10 years of experience teaching secondary school science including advanced courses and working in or with biotechnology, research science or pharmaceutical companies
