Position Summary
The Dean of Students works with the Principal in carrying out the school’s academic and
behavior programs. As a professional educator, the Dean of Students understands and responds
to the challenges presented by today’s diverse student population. The Dean of Students provides
proactive leadership to engage all stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to
support the students’ academic achievement, personal and social development. The Dean of
Students works cooperatively with the principal, assistant principals, counselors, nurses, staff, students, and parents towards a positive school climate.
The successful Dean of Students will demonstrate a commitment to strengthening community engagement and communication in pursuit of the building and district’s mission. Working with the building administrative team, the Dean of Students will focus on the daily implementation of attendance and student code of conduct policies and procedures. The Dean of Students is also responsible for implementing strategies that will motivate and inspire students to succeed and stay in school.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Monitor student daily attendance, meet with students, assign consequences in accordance with the code of conduct, and develop interventions as needed.
- Analyze chronic absenteeism data monthly on a building-level, grade-level, and student-level.
- Investigate daily student code of conduct violations and assign consequences.
- Address chronic attendance and discipline issues with parents/guardians for positive team-based outcomes.
- Follow established protocols to ensure a consistent approach to student discipline.
- Communicate with the building principal, the administrative team, and the counseling team as appropriate, coordinating a team-based approach to student solutions.
- Facilitate interventions for at-risk students in the areas of attendance and social and emotional well-being.
- Monitor progress towards graduation for at-risk students collaboratively with at-risk counselors.
- Facilitate connections between students, families, and needed supports within the school and community.
- Implement interventions, including but not limited to home visits, parent conferences, and BOCES visits.
- Supervise Home Teaching process, placements, progress, and online curriculum set-up as needed.
- Communicate with parents/guardians and students to facilitate home teaching modalities including in-person, videoconference, and online.
- Recruit, on-board, and support home teachers.
- Communicate with Assistant Principal responsible for testing for all needed accommodations for Regents exams.
- Collaborate with SST and special education team to make appropriate referrals to CSE
- Collaborate with Assistant Principals to define and revise protocols related to discipline and consequences as well as student safety.
- Conduct formal and informal observation cycles as part of the APPR district plan as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- New York State SBL/SDA certification
- Successful teaching experience
- Demonstrated leadership experience in a school setting.
