This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirement, and submit your application within four months of appointment. The final award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office.

Qualifications:

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45 lbs. and over), light carrying (under 15 lbs.), reaching over shoulders, use of fingers, walking (8 hrs.), standing (8 hrs.), ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision correctable at 13-16 in. to Jaeger 1-4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20, ability to distinguish basic colors, ability to distinguish shades of colors, hearing (aid permitted), hearing without aid, clear speech, and mental and emotional stability.

Responsibilities:

Emergency Medicine staff work directly with, including but not limited to, other physicians, nursing staff, administrative staff, and social workers. The Emergency Department (ED) operates 24/7 and the selectee will be involved in the evaluation, treatment, and management of patients requiring acute medical and specialty care.

As an Emergency Physician you will be responsible for the following duties:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: emergent intake, patient assessment, patient history, physical examinations, ordering diagnostic and therapeutic tests/studies, emergent resuscitation, and management of difficult airways.

The Physician interprets ECGs and selected radiographic tests; performs invasive procedures for which incumbent is credentialed; initiates consults as well as referrals after discharge from the Emergency Department, and prescribes medications/supplies in accordance with VA policy and VA formulary and State regulations.

Perform assessments/examinations on initial encounter with unscheduled, emergency and new patients.

Coordinate patient treatment plans (involve Primary Care and specialists as appropriate).

Order appropriate diagnostic tests as necessary to complete the evaluation.

Admit patients to the hospital or discharge them from the ED with appropriate follow-up.

Perform medication reconciliation with all ED discharged patients.

Participate in Quality Assurance, chart reviews, and support applicable ED performance measures.

Coordinate patient care with consultants as deemed appropriate.

Provide physician oversight to nursing staff and other mid-level staff members.
Participate in quality assurance programs and chart reviews.

Attend physician staff meetings

The selectee must demonstrate continuing effort to keep abreast of new medical developments and medical literature, and must meet facility and licensing requirements for continuing medical education (CME).

Provide effective delivery of outpatient care while meeting and exceeding compliance standards.

Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.


Work Schedule: Tours of duty include rotating 8 and 12 hour shifts for twenty-four hours per day/seven days per week coverage; however, subject to change, depending on the needs of the service/medical center
