What are the responsibilities and job description for the Locksmith position at Veterans Health Administration?
Incumbent performs all duties of a journeyman Locksmith and is assigned to the Maintenance Section of Engineering Service. The Locksmith performs complex tasks involved in building, repairing, overhauling, modifying, adapting, testing and installing a variety of locking and security devices typically found on doors, desks, compartments, mobile equipment, safes and other secured locations.
EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Working Conditions: Incumbent works in a fully-secured lock shop containing all required tools, equipment and materials, and performs 60% of preliminary work therein. The remainder of the time spent working is in the field, both indoors and outdoors. Exposed to possibility of cuts, abrasions, scrapes and bruises. Must wear shields for protection when operating key cutting machine and electric grinder. Observes all safety precautions.

Responsibilities:
- Incumbent coordinates with the Chiefs of Engineering and Police to discuss special locking requirements and determine suitable locks to be utilized in solving security problems.
- Incumbent improvises trade techniques to adapt locking mechanisms for uses to which they were not specifically designed to hamper or prevent the use of standard neutralization techniques. Incumbent shall determine if locking devices have been tampered with and provide professional documentation to Police Service as required.
- Incumbent makes independent judgments in determining work sequence, selection and use of trade tools, and techniques applied. May be required to provide technical assistance and guidance to other staff at any VA Central Ohio Healthcare System remote location.
- Incumbent performs visual and operational checks to locate trouble sources and determine best methods of correcting problems. Removes locks, disassembles, detects worn or damaged parts, i.e., broken springs, jammed pins, bent discs, broken tail pieces, rust and corrosion. Lubricates and cleans parts, straightens bent parts, replaces broken parts, reassembles, tests and reinstalls devices.
