Part time Social Worker

Job Relationships: Reports to Community Programs Manager.

Classification: Exempt, hourly

Location: San Francisco, Visitacion Valley and Sunnydale communities

Job Summary:

Vets in Vans is steadfast in its mission to provide accessible veterinary care in the Bay Area of California. ViV was created to help provide access to veterinary medicine for families who were either lacking in financial resources, and/or transportation to reach a stand-alone clinic.

With the Petsmart Charities Incubator Grant, our goal in reaching communities in Visitacion Valley and Sunnydale in San Francisco based on anecdotal data from San Francisco Animal Care and Control. The part time social worker is responsible for working with the Community Programs Manager to collect data in these two communities to determine the needs of the community with pets.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Data collection (70%)

  • Establish and cultivate new opportunities for partnerships with community centers, churches, local groups to be able to collect necessary data in Sunnydale and Visitacion Valley
  • Utilize a holistic, compassionate rapport building approach when communicating with pet owners providing survey data.

Petsmart Grant Updates (20%)

  • Oversee the Pet Food Pantry program. Includes purchasing and maintaining food inventory, creating and adhering to guidelines for distribution, setting the distribution schedule, and tracking our distribution statistics. Must be able to attend Pantry distribution dates.
  • Oversee the Spay/Neuter Voucher program. Includes processing voucher requests, scheduling appointments, taking deposits, distributing vouchers and tracking voucher redemption.

General Duties (10%)

  • Respond to electronic and telephone messages in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Contribute to routine reports for our Petsmart Charities Grant reports
  • Maintain inventory of supplies needed for this program
  • Serve as a liaison promoting Vets in Vans philosophy and goals throughout the community.

Qualifications:

  • Masters in Social Work highly preferred
  • Experience with and enthusiasm for building rapport with community members.
  • Proven success in program coordination – including planning, executing, and assessing.
  • Experience with the human-animal bond, pet loss support, empathy fatigue prevention, conflict resolution, and/or de-escalation techniques.
  • Comfortable with flexibility and adaptability; being able to shift styles to fit the needs of a wide range of cultures, people, and organizations.
  • Ability to easily develop trusting relationships with diverse individuals from many different backgrounds.
  • Bilingual preferred.
  • Proficient in Office-based programs.
  • Valid Driver’s license.
  • Pre-employment background check required.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed outside in the communities and veterinary clinic environments with exposure to seasonal outdoor conditions.
  • Must be comfortable handling dogs and cats of all sizes and ages.
  • Frequent exposure to members of the public experiencing personal crisis.
  • Animal contacts and related injuries, including bites and scratches, may occur. May occasionally handle sick, injured, or deceased pets.
  • Noise exposure varies and often includes uncontrolled barking and other animal vocalizations.
  • Animal waste contact, smells and visual exposure are prevalent.
  • Lifting up to 50lbs. with reasonable accommodation.
  • Frequent walking, bending and stooping.

  • Be able to work independently on assigned tasks as well as to accept direction on assignments.
  • Maintain communication with the EDs to assure expectations and goals are met.
  • Maintain positive, cooperative relationships with all team members and ensure that your actions support the hospital, the doctors, and the practice’s guiding principles.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $30.00 per hour

Expected hours: 10 – 20 per week
