What are the responsibilities and job description for the Nutritionist position at Virginia Dept of Health?
This is a part-time salaried position and eligible for excellent benefits. The salary range is based on 20 hours per week, $19,102 – $21,601.
The Crater Health District is a part of the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) that administers public health services to include clinical services, nutrition services, environmental health services, vital records, disease prevention and monitoring, emergency planning, and many other healthcare related services.
Based in the Petersburg Health Department, the Nutritionist position provides nutrition services to WIC program participants in a variety of settings within eight (8) clinic sites in Crater Health District. This position conducts nutritional assessments; develops, modifies, monitors, and evaluates the nutrition care plan process; certifies clients for program services; provides and documents basic/secondary/high risk nutrition education; develops and conducts group nutrition education classes; makes referrals to programs such as Medicaid/SNAP/Head Start. Performs anthropometric and hematological duties/assessments. Distributes program benefits to clients and schedules clinic visits. Provides breastfeeding education and promotion to WIC participants. May perform other related administrative tasks.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of principles of nutrition & its relationship to public health. Experience working with the public & interpreting, planning, & promoting nutrition programs. Work experience include serving as a member of a health care team. Demonstrated ability to interview clients and obtain/assess client information; interpret, document, calculate, and compile routine data. Customer service with diverse cultural backgrounds needed. Successful candidate will have: 1. (i) Received a baccalaureate or higher degree in nutritional sciences, community nutrition, public health nutrition, food and nutrition, dietetics or human nutrition from a regionally accredited college or university and (ii) Satisfactorily completed a program of supervised clinical experience approved by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association; 2. Active registration through the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association; 3. An active certificate of the Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists by the Board of Nutrition Specialists; 4. An active accreditation by the Diplomats or Fellows of the American Board of Nutrition; 5. A current license or certificate as a dietitian or nutritionist issued by another state; or 6. The minimum requisite education, training and experience determined by the Board of Health Professions appropriate for such person to hold himself out to be, or advertise or allow himself to be advertised as, a dietitian or nutritionist. Demonstration work experience to provide/conduct client and/or program information/education.
Preferred Qualifications
Prefer WIC related or public health nutrition experience and/or registered dietitian. Bilingual in English and Spanish desired. Knowledge and experience in use of computers and computer applications preferred; skilled in internet, email and Microsoft Office.
Special Requirements
This is a restricted position which is solely funded by a Federal WIC Grant for a one year period ending 9/30/2022. The availability of funding is scheduled for review before the grant expiration date and periodically thereafter. Employment is contingent on the continued availability of grant or non-general funds.
The CPA candidate must successfully complete all of the WIC 101 Modules, study guides, post-tests (with a 90% or higher), and activities within 60 days of hire or submission of a signed agreement form. The CPA candidate must successfully complete supplemental Maternal & Child Health and Breastfeeding courses scheduled through the State WIC Office within 90 days of hire or submission of a signed agreement form. The CPA candidate must successfully conduct 25 (5 for each participant category) preceptor observed counseling sessions within 180 days of hire or submission of a signed agreement form. The CPA candidate must be observed counseling by a State WIC Office nutrition liaison during the next scheduled onsite Local Agency Management Evaluation.
Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a state and federal criminal history background check and the Department of Social Service’s Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check, U.S. HHS IG Exclusion List check, employment reference check, proof of education (diploma or transcripts), professional licensure verification, and E-Verify. Conviction information, ascertained through a fingerprint-based background check, is a final step in the application process (if selected for the position).
In accordance with Executive Directive #18, as a condition of employment, the Commonwealth of Virginia requires all Executive Branch employees, including new hires, to disclose their vaccination status. Required to participate in district events, meetings, emergency operations, etc. May require work during some weekend &/or evening hours. A valid State Driver’s License is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency.
