We are seeking individuals interested in joining our team who are able to provide marine field expertise and leadership as Watercraft Operator II.
This position is with the Jamestown Scotland Ferry in Surry County. This is an hourly wage position and is limited to 1500 hours to average 29 hours per week in a 12 month period. This position does not included the state benefit package. This position is on call with no guaranteed minimum number of hours.
As a Ferry Shift Coordinator, your responsibilities will include:
Job Safety – Wear required personal protection equipment. Maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and procedures. Ensure equipment is used properly. Maintain a clean, orderly and safe work environment. Follow VDOT safety regulations and practices.
Supervises Facilities – Coordinate slip assignments for fueling, maintenance and lay-vessels. Conduct daily air monitoring aboard all vessels. Assist vessels with traffic control when required. Assist with emergency situation on the docks and ferries. Perform other duties as assigned to maintain the safety, cleanliness and overall operation of the ferry and facility.
Staffing of Ferry Crews and Public Relations – Prepare and maintain duty schedules for all staff. Ensure appropriate changes and updates are made to crew assignments as necessary ensuring no missed trips. Serve as operator for all incoming telephone calls. Serve as Ferry Crew Member when required.
Passenger Assistance and Vessel Security – Provide information and assistance to public in a professional manor as needed. Provide clear directions to vehicle operators as they board or depart ferry. Make frequent and thorough safety and security inspections on the ferry.

Minimum Qualifications
You are minimally qualified if you have:
- Basic computer operations and have the ability to work in a team environment.
- Experience coordinating specific job duties with crew members.
- Experience creating and updating reports, performing heavy manual labor, and responding to emergency operations as necessary.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience as a VDOT Watercraft Operator. High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.
